Default 5 hour rule

I think my consultant said I didn't need to follow the 5 hour rule now I'm on refeed. I still have been and I don't start mixing proteins for another 4 days or so. Just wondering if anyone else gave up the 5 hour rule before protein mixing days.

Hi Smiles

I thought you kept the 5 hr rule thru refeed and only changed on maintenance but its been nrly 2 yrs since I was there!

Am sure others will know or I can check back in my refeed diary.

Sorry my mistake. just looked back and was changing things around with the times in refeed. Think this is to see what happens with your system.

Made me smile looking back as I had posted a comment about it being my husbands birthday on day 12 of refeed - thats when I fell pregnant with my beautiful daughter which landed me back here.

Wouldnt change it for the world!

Hi Smiley,

As I understand it, the day you start "mixing proteins" in Refeed is the day the 5 hour rule gets relaxed.

See, the idea of the 5 hour rule when on Plan, is so that your body has time to digest each protein before another (different) protein arrives in the stomach.

Since "some" (a very few) people have found that they CAN'T mix proteins even when on Maintenance (there have been two or three on this Forum), Dr Cohen keeps you all safe, all the way through Plan, with that 5 hour rule.

The "protein mixing" takes place in Refeed when its affect can be noted by you. Your body is clean, and any "changes" then amplify the effect (bloating, weight gain, nausea, etc).

Usually protein mixing comes some 7 to 10 days or so into Refeed, and AFTER THAT TIME, the 5 hour rule no longer needs to apply.

Unless things have changed in the last wee while, I'd think your Plan should say that somewhere.

I'd really like to hear of others who can confirm/deny the above though - specially those with newer Refeeds (in case things HAVE changed recently...)

Koh

Thanks FF and Koh. Yes, it does say in the refeed plan you can do away with the 5 hour rule once you start mixing proteins. That's why I questioned if my consultant did in fact say to me that the 5 hour rule doesn't apply even from day 1. I'm pretty sure that's what she said because I remember her saying that it's still a good idea to keep it, but you didn't have to.

Just curious if anyone else has been told the same. As I said, I am still doing the 5 hour rule at the moment. I might just flick her an email on Monday to confirm.

FF, I hope I don't have any "baby surprises"! I already have two boys and that's enough for me!

Hi smiley....I followed the 5 hr rule in exception to 2-3 days when protien mixing started(just circumstancial). My consulted actually says that we should follow it even when mixing protiens as much as poss.

Skinny, that seems to be the general consensus for successful weight maintenance even after finishing the program. My consultant said she asked Kathy Nicol what her secret was to maintaining her loss and she said she still goes by the 5 hour rule.

All makes sense, I'm just a bit over the clock watching and having to organise appointments to fit in with my lunchtime! Oh well, a small price to pay for a new, skinny me I guess!
