Default Jem_HA's Diary - For the Second and Final Time

Hi there...

My name is Jem, I'm 28 and this is my second and final attempt the Cohen's Lifestyle Program.

I first completed the Cohen's Program at 18. I was saving up to travel and the vain teenager that I was recognised that I would have a better time overseas if I was slimmer (improved health and wellbeing was not a motivating factor). I lost 17kg in 8 weeks and was given my Re-feed. I didn't follow it! I'm hindsight this was the biggest mistake I could make.

Over the course of 6 months I regained the weight I lost and then in the following 10 years I put on even more. I am at my heaviest ever weight but I believe Cohen's Program will help me change that.

I feel that this time things will be different because this means more to me than fitting into some trendy jeans - I'm sick and tired or being sick and tired, I'm so proud of my life (I have an amazing partner, we've just finished a renovation of our first home and I'm kicking goals at my job) but I'm not making the most of it! I want to be healthier, I want to have energy, I want to have balance...and yes of course I want to be slim!

So this is it! I'm giving this my all, I'm doing this and not doing it again! I will succeed, I will re-feed, I will maintain.

So just a little more from me on the Program...

I am using the same program I was given in 2004. I contacted my local clinic and was told to give my old plan a go over 2 weeks - if I didn't experience some changes then I would need a new plan. I am committed to purchasing a new plan if required as I see this as an investment in my long term health.

Today is Day 4 and already I'm less bloated and sleeping better. My skin also appears clearer. I haven't been hungry at all and feel very satisfied after each meal so far.

I'm looking forward to check-in this Saturday 17/01/15. I feel different so I'll be interested to see if my mind is in tune with my body. Hopefully, I'll be posting some downward trending stats.

Hi J,

It seems that we have the exact same amount of weight to loose. I started at 105.8 and my goal is 65-62 according to DC.

So far I have had a great weight loss and this is my 12th week.

I will cheer you on - within 12 weeks the results are A M A Z I N G!

Keep going. Keep Calm and Cohen on.

Thanks, everyone. I must say the support offered by this forum is amazing! The welcomes, the pats on the back, the calling you out (when your doing it wrong - no excuses) and the recipes...oh the recipes...Cohen's Program was not this advanced with recipes 10 years ago and I've got to say that the creative way people cook and share their cooking could make all the difference if you've got a lot of weight to lose and need to be in on your program for a long time which I do.

EEEE, your weight loss so far is really impressive (congratulations!) I hope I'll have a similar experience

So it seems I am rediscovering my Cohen's Program just in time...I had a doctor's appointment this afternoon to receive the results of blood tests on 08/01/15 and it would appear that I have impaired glucose tolerance (or pre-diabetes).

My mother has Type 2 Diabetes (diagnosed at 45 and now at 65 is on high dose insulin injections) and so does my older brother (diagnosed at 30). If I wasn't motivated to 100% comply to this program, I certainty am now. Diabetes is not a condition I want to claim!

Has anyone else ever been labelled pre-diabetic? Have you found the program to help you treat this condition?

I don't recall anyone mentioning it...but I have done lots of reading that a low carb high fat (LCHF) diet has has awesome success with reversing type 2 diabetes. Let me know if you want some info on that.

Thanks, Ciors. Any info you have would be great - I've also found a Facebook group and joined that as I feel after Cohen's the principles of the LCHF diet in conjunction with Cohen's maintenance advice will be invaluable in prolonging/preventing diabetes.

As I mentioned in my post, I'm mostly grateful that I have my program ready and available to follow so I can reverse this pre-diabetes before it becomes a chronic disease.

More fortunately, I continue to feel great and it's Day 5. I did have a very rumbly tummy this morning...the gurgling was so loud that it got the attention of other commuters (I take the bus to work - parking in the CBD is atrocious at best). In response to the chatty tum I rejigged my menu today so I had a brekkie that included crisp breads and I bought diet soft drink for the afternoon thinking I might get some cravings. I also had my remaing crisp read allowance when I got home. Feeling pretty satisfied and will have a nectarine for 'dessert' to cap off the day.

I'm hoping it will Ladel.

The message from the GP was to cut out sugar - processed as well as high sugar fruits and lose some weight. Her opinion was that if I could lose even 10-15kg it would have a huge impact.

I intend to lose more than that following Cohen's to give myself the best chance at a long, healthy, balanced life and I have a lot of faith in this research. This forum alone is testimony that his principles work!

Good luck to us all

Hey Jem_HA,
Good luck with your program. I am looking forward to seeing your results on your old program as I will be using my old program (from 09/10) when I get started next week too.
Sorry to hear about your blood test results. Changing your diet and losing weight will absolutely stop the progress of a pre diabetes state. Good on you for catching it now and even better, being one step ahead and already taking action!
Looking forward to following your progress

Welcome back to the forum Jem.

I am also on my 2nd real attempt (had a couple of U-turns in between) and need to lose nearly double of what you need.

Even though everyone on this forum helps motivate and inspire us, it is sometimes harder for me to see my ticker showing i have to lose nearly 1 whole person.

Your weight loss is only part of the process, the best thing i have learnt from everyone is that the process helps with self confidence, ability to love ourselves no matter what weight we are.

I look forward to sharing your journey and building our confidence and love for ourselves together.

Judy

Thanks everyone for your kind message...

Just checking in on my diary to report on Day 6...still having a rumbly tummy in the mornings but no feelings of hunger. If it weren't for the gut chatter I wouldn't be aware that I'm due for a meal. This makes me believe I'll be able to do this long term.

I have had an accidental deviation - I made 'nachos' tonight (mozzarella cheese melted over crisp breads with mushroom, zucchini, capsicum, tomato salsa - salsa seasoned with cumin, paprika, coriander, garlic). It was delicious but I saved up my crisp breads from the whole day forgetting we're limited to two at a time. As a result I feel a little too full from dinner so I know my body agrees this isn't the right way to eat at the moment. I hope my error also doesn't adversely effect my progress so far. We'll see tomorrow...

Nachos sound yum. Good luck with the losses and so hope it helps the pre diab. I love reading Mark Hyman on reversing health problems by diet. Much of his stuff rings true with our Dr C.

Check-in Day and I couldn't be more excited to share these results - not only have I had a significant loss (in kg and cm) but I feel good, I'm sleeping better, I no longer have stiff joints in the morning or a blocked nose (I would constantly have to blow my nose upon waking each morning). This also means that my old program from 10 years ago is still effective despite a recently developed medical condition.

So here it is...starting stats as at 10/01/2015
Weight: 109.6kg
Bust: 112cm
Waist: 92cm
Paunch (Lower Abdomen): 120cm
Hips: 127cm
Thighs: 68cm
Arms: 35cm

Week 1 Check-in 17/01/2015
Weight: 105.1kg (4.5kg loss)
Bust: 112cm
Waist: 88cm
Paunch (Lower Abdomen): 115cm
Hips: 124.5cm
Thighs: 65.5cm
Arms: 34cm
**4.5 weight loss and 16cm loss over entire body**

Woo-hoo, bring on Week 2
