Actually, the programme is so designed as to almost completely rid the body of uric acid buildup. All the food groups that are normally associated with gout, (those protein sources that are high in Purine - like organ meats, sardines, anchovies, soy products and so for are almost totally absent from the diet. Additionally, the protein sources we do eat are "balanced" with the other food groups and in much small quantities than we are normally eating. However, if you have not been drinking enough water, this could cause a buildup of uric acid as your body is not flushing it out fast enough. But at 2 litres a day or more it should be more than enough. I was on Allopurinol for the better part of 20 years (off & on as I changed my diet to rid myself of those foodstuffs that were high in purine). I also took Lovastatin for cholesterol and two heart medications to keep my blood pressure at 138/90! Today it is between 110/70 ~ 115/75. For the past 26 months I've been off ALL medications and haven't looked back. Having said that, I still eat Cohen friendly when I can and in moderation when I can't. I live by that. Today I weigh 71kg and my target range was 69-72 kg on the programme. I live and breath the lifestyle change.

According to the American Medical Association, purine-containing foods include:

* Beer, other alcoholic beverages.
* Anchovies, sardines in oil, fish roes, herring.
* Yeast.
* Organ meat (liver, kidneys, sweetbreads)
* Legumes (dried beans, peas)
* Meat extracts, consomme, gravies.
* Mushrooms, spinach, asparagus, cauliflower.

A lot more information here:

Thanks SMS I have been trying to read through your diary to find any reference but it's a looong diary.

I had no gout problems before the change in my diet. Hmmm I didn't know mushrooms could be a problem. Will have to cut them and see if that makes it ok. I am definitely drinking 2+ litres of water a day so that's definitely not it. Will cut mushrooms and see if that makes a difference. I don't eat alot of the other stuff so that's all it could be really.

Mushrooms, spinach and cauliflower are my main veges I'm worried about cutting them out because it doesn't leave me with much else - I drink my full 3 litres of water daily so I'm not sure why else my Uric Acid would be so high.

Hi Pauly,

maybe try upping your water intake a little. I was drinking 3 litres and the clinic then told me to up it to 3.5 to 4litres. (1 litre for every 25kg that u weigh) seems to have helped me to lose more than the 1kg a week so it may help with your uric acid I dont know. Just a thought.....

Hi all,

Just for anyone following this thread, I wanted to highlight a little part for more scrutiny :-

That bolded bit works fine (as a guide) for people who are in the Overweight and Normal BMI ranges.

BUT, to take it as gospel when hugely overweight can be disastrous - so be sure to think (or check with your clinic) before taking that guide as mandatory.

Asy said herself something like this - "At the start, following that rule, I would have had to drink SEVEN litres per day - that is MADNESS !!"

It is dangerous to drink TOO MUCH water. so follow that particular guideline within reason..... Of course, make allowances for your environment too. Don't blindly follow mantras without consideration - including mine (bolded earlier in this paragraph ).

And me? I'm a tall skinny-ish bloke (BMI ~25.5) and have been this way forever, so I haven't faced (weight-wise) what you all have !!
