But deep down, I know there is more to this emotional eating, and I feel that just avoiding the foods is not the complete answer. There has to be more, so I'm still searching. Am currently reading a book that has many of these answers, called Absolute Happiness by Michael Domeyko Rowland. It gives a lot of very good strategies for clearing our emotional blocks as well as explaining how we get to creating these blocks. As with many of the books, it's actually doing the exercises, but I find he puts them in such a way that makes it easy. The book centres around taking responsibility for ourselves as we are. That we created ourselves by all the choices that we have made throughout our lives and that those choices were often times based on past experiences that no longer serve us. Anyway, this is the second time I'm reading this one, and I'm actually doing the exercises, so will report if I find any that work particularly well for me. One has to find what resonates best within you and go with that! Vee |

Update on Think Slim
My update on the "Think Slim" book.
Not good for me! I have a addictive/obsesive personality. So the constant repeating of phrases and mantras made things much worse for me. I know it has helped a lot of others on the forum, but unfortunatly it wasn't for me. Shell

Shell,
I found the same thing ... thought it was just me so I stopped using it, figuring it was a one off, thought I might try again later, don't think I will bother now. I also have addictive tendencies .... hmmm interesting. Connie

My 2 cents on a book
I'll add Tom Venuto's "The Body Fat Solution"
He covers nutrition, training, emotional eating, etc. for a well-rounded, well-written book! http://chetday.com/blog/2009/01/tom-...k-body-fat.htm |

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has read Jillian Michaels' new book (Shes the trainer from Biggest Loser Australia I think)? Master Your Metabolism: The 3 Diet Secrets to Naturally Balancing Your Hormones for a Hot and Healthy Body! Does it feel as if you’re fighting your body to lose even one pound—or just to maintain your current weight? Respected health and wellness expert and bestselling author Jillian Michaels has been there, too. So she consulted top experts in the field of metabolism and discovered that she’d inadvertently been abusing her endocrine system for years. After “fixing” her own metabolism, she decided to share what she learned by devising this simple, 3-phase plan that engages all the weight-loss hormones (including the friendly HGH, testosterone, DHEA; and the not-so-friendly: insulin, cortisol, and excess estrogen). In Master Your Metabolism, discover how to: •REMOVE “anti-nutrients” from your diet •RESTORE foods that speak directly to fat-burning genes •REBALANCE energy and your hormones for effortless weight loss Michaels offers a wealth of information throughout, including: shopping lists and online shopping resources, hormone-trigger food charts, how to eat “power nutrient” foods on a budget, smart strategies for eating out, quick and easy recipes, as well as mini-programs for addressing PMS, andropause, metabolic syndrome, PCOS, and menopause. About the Author JILLIAN MICHAELS, best known as a strength trainer and life coach for the NBC hit series The Biggest Loser, is the author of the bestselling Making the Cut and Winning by Losing. I'm assuming much of what is in the book is probably what we have learned on Cohen's anyway, but since it's focussed on the role hormones play in weight control, I figure it would be interesting and relative reading. I'd be keen to know if anyone has read it because I'm thinking i'd like to. |

'Thin Secrets"
Thin Secret by Lizzie Kingsley PhD
Have you ever noticed how other people stay slim without effort? Well, you're not alone - 95% of us believe that some people are just 'naturally' thinner than others. How is it that they seem to eat whatever they please and do not exercise, yet still stay slim? Have they just been blessed with 'good genes', or is it something else that sets them apart? Dr Lizzie Kingsley decided to investigate. In Thin Secrets: How to be thin without dieting, Dr Kingsley reveals how to become slim for life. Find out how you can apply the Thin Secrets - and not only lose weight, but remain slim permanently. And the best bit? No more dieting. Ever! So I am only a quarter of the way thru this book but enjoying it and thought it was an interesting look into how thin woman do it. Makes you think a little. Carla. |

I guess we are all so different...
I LOVE the ThinkSlim book - I find it really goes into my subconsious so my negative thoughts and anxiety is stopped in its tracks (and its the anxiety that ends in a binge) This book has been my saviour to stopping the anxiety, bingeing and constant obsession with food... May we all find our own answers somewhere - and keep at it thats the key!

Help! I've just realised I eat my feelings!!
Hi,
I don't think I am the only one on here that would describe a less than healthy relationship with food. There is a PLETHORA of internet sites about emotional eating. But does anyone know of any good book titles? Or any good internet based sites they have come across that may help newbies and those in search of some additional 'light'/perspectives on the food abuse? I seriously think this is the large part of being successful on this programme- I feel a strong need to understand why I feel the urge to eat when I am not hungry- Identify triggers, and beat them. Anyone that can share resources through links, book titles, or even your own experiences would really be adding some valuable food for thought (the positive kind!)

Re: Help! I've just realised I eat my feelings!!
Hey Carissa,
I started reading the Beck Diet Solution by Judith Beck the week I started Cohen's - it's been fantastic for me...I ordered mine from Booktopia because I couldn't find it elsewhere. It may not be your thing but I like the little tasks that you have to do as it makes you really think about the all the reasons we use food for the wrong reasons. Here is a link to the website if you wanna check it out: http://www.beckdietsolution.com/Library/InfoManage/Guide.asp?FolderID=1&SessionID={080BDB15-E073-4045-ADCA-01954774BB3A} |

Thanks T.I.N =)
I am going to check that book out- I might go down to my Library and see if they have anything. Because it is my uni library I actually figured they may have a fair decent amount of literature out there on the topic. Thankyou <3

Re: Helpful Books
The Thin Commandments- Dr Stephen Gullo
I have almost finished this book- It has been the best one I have read so far in terms of having a positive affect and really strengthening my mind. The book focuses heavily on emotional eating/binging and psychological relationships with food. The author knows what he is talking about. He backs it up with case senarios and factual evidence from prior research. He explains the reasons behind emotional eating and what his past clients have done to overcome their issues. As a bonus; when he mentions snippets of eating tips throughout the book, his views/ideas really compliment the basic principles of the Cohen's diet

Re: Helpful Books
TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE - Dr Gail Ratcliffe
The five-step plan to health and happiness Step 1 : Recognise what upsets you Step 2 : Change the things you can Step 3 : Change your attitude if you cant change the situation Step 4 : Exercise Step 5 : Do the things you enjoy! This book explains how stress reaction is self-perpetuating and creates a stress cycle. And that if you dont stop the stress cycle, it feeds upon itself, creating a nasty merry-go-round. It gives you the tools to stop the stress cycle and also to change the way you handle stressful situations. It also explains how stress and negative emotions affect your body, both chemically and physically. I found it very intersting that stress and how you handle it, can change your whole outlook on life and how you feel about yourself and others. If you dont handle stress very well, everything can seem all doom and gloom, and you cant sometimes see a way out. And just by changing the way you react to stress, how it can turn your thinking around to be more positive! Highly recomended. Shell
