Default Beware the hidden SUGAR!

If anyone recalls, I mentioned not having any food in the house last Saturday when we got home from the holidays. Well, I went out Sunday morning and bought a 200g tub of 99% fat free Natural Plain Yoghurt.

I went round to the inlaws for morning tea, with my yoghurt and guestimated 25g which I discarded, and ate the rest. I commented that it was a really yummy plain yoghurt, and after I was finished I read the container more carefully.

THERE WAS Darned SUGAR in the ingredients!!!

I couldn't believe it.

Who in their right mind would put sugar into plain natural yoghurt!!!

Must admit, it would never have occurred to me to check whether they'd snuck sugar into the darned yoghurt...

Moral here is don't assume it's not there

Hi Asy

That is quite a health risk for diabetics.

I ate the red lid Jalna yoghurt for two months before Mike pointed out that it was 6.4 fat mg content after he had brought home the green lid variety.

I didn't like the green lid yoghurt, and continued with the red lid type. Perhaps this is why my weight loss was quite slow - but I figured that I had been on it for weeks and had probably adapted to it (justification, you see!)

Still eating it for breakfast - the day doesn't feel quite right without yoghurt and kiwi fruit!

Yoghurt - my clinic recommends Vaalia low fat natural as the creamiest and most popular among clients.

And I enjoy it. I approched it with some trepidation as in my past life I always bought, thick creamy greek style.

I eat the Jalna Yoghurt, with the dark green lid.

I find it really nice.

But then I put Hermesetas tablets into it!

I found it quite tart, but I weigh my portion, then get a teaspoon of really hot water and dissolve a few Hermesetas tablets in the water then mix them through the yoghurt. It's fantastic and doesn't 'waste' my fruit portion!

If I can't get the Jalna, I buy Nestle 99% fat free Yoghurt, it's runnier, but still really nice.

If I can't get either of those, I Panic.

I can't get the natural Vaalia in the big tubs, it only comes in the flavoured (unless anyone in Perth knows where I can get the big tubs from).
I'm suprised by all the "natural" yogurts out there that have so many additives. I've found some really really really nice low fat yogurts at my local gourmet shop, but I only get 2 serves out of 1 tub, so it's a bit expensive (but sometimes really worth it!).

Peters is the same as Vaalia for anyone interested (not sure if Peters is available all states).

Asy: I'm with you, I just use sweetners to fix my yogurt, I hate wasting my fruit like that!

I use the Yoplait light natural yoghurt, Yummo, nice and creamy, no sugar low fat...... its in a light blue tub

Brieziel, I also use the Yoplait light natural yoghurt. I tried the Jalna but it is too thick for my taste. It's funny how when I started the plan I couldn't stand the tartiness of the yoghurt and I couldn't eat it....now I don't even notice it and I marvel how our tastes change. It's also very filling and easy to have. I think in the future I will always eat it for breakfast.

Hi people,
I am new here, thanks Brie.
I use the Nestle yoghurt. But I havent checked out the sugar content. Best do that because I also use the Jalna yoghurt too. Look forward to sharing info with you all

Yeah I'm back. Been super serious again. OOOOOHHHHHHHH dear I looked at the sugar content in the nestle yoghurt and it is way high. DONT GO THERE PEOPLE. Back to Jalna for me!

Yes the 99% fat free has got alot of sugar in it. Check it out.

Hi guys,

This is my first post in any forum ever! I've been reading the the somersoft form and found Kristine & Asy's "Cohen's" posts there and decided to give Cohen's a go as well.

I've just completed my first month and lost 10kg. Absolutely amazing program. However, I still get hungry.... I have finally decided that my "hunger" must be in my head - ie craving to eat and feel full. I'm reading a book called "Love Hunger" which is helping me with the mental side of why I've always big. "My name is Kez, and I'm a binge eater." Seriously, they say food is an addiction to some. Time to bust some old mental habits!

Anyway, why I posted here was that I tried one of the suggestions from the Cohen's newsletter that said to mix in a little Sprite Zero to my yoghurt and drink it. It's really nice - like a smoothie. It's so easy and quick and yummy - great for those mornings when you just don't have time.

Hello fellow Cohenite and welcome.

Thank all that is good that Kristine posted her diary on somersoft - that's how I come to be here too.

Hunger can be a problem for some (Ispeak from experience here) - speak to your consultant at the clinic and make absolutely certain you are following the plan to the letter. I started 17th January, so am just 6 days ahead of you and my hunger is just tempering in the last 5 days or so.

Great loss for you for the first month. You must be really thrilled.

Default Yoghurt

Hi people, been doin some research into the yoghurt thing and it seems to me alot of the natural yoghurts have quite a bit of sugar in them (could have fooled me!!) Anyway the yoghurt I now use is the Pauls 99.8% FF. Only has 6.5g per 100g. Can anyone tell me of a better one

Heya

I eat 'The Margaret River Dairy Company' 99.7% Fat Free Natural Yoghurt...
its pot set and only has 4.5g of sugar per 100g.
Im not sure if youll be able to get it over east tho? its about 3.99 for a Kg tub

I really love this yoghurt, it doesnt have that weird soury kind of taste and its thick and creamy


mmmmm just thinking about it now makes me want some...

I REALLY LOVE THIS YOGHURT

I had a good look for more exotic yoghurt (that jalna) but couldn't find any...

I'll keep looking, but in the meantime, the Jalna will do me just fine (wtih the sweetener!)

Hi

The Jalna Natural Yoghurt (Red Lid) has 6.4gm fat per 200 gm serving.

It has whole milk, milk solids and LME cultures. That's it.

I have no idea what it costs, but Coles and Bi-Lo sell it.

Jalna also sell a Green Lid variety which has lower fat, but I have the Red Lid 1 kilo tubs which, of course, last almost six days so are very economical to buy.

This is from a friend of mine who had just finished Cohen's when I was about to start. Quite by accident, I met her again after not seeing her for some years. We exchanged a few emails and I was lamenting how horrible 'natural' yoghurt is.

Her reply:

'Oh, I tried to keep off this food and diet thing but, I can't! The yoghurt thing, I hated it too at the start but I heard once that your taste buds only take a short time to adjust to a new food, I think he said about three days, the rest is physiologic. My first week, it was disgusting, the second response was that I didn't enjoy it until the last spoon which for some reason, was so tasty that I was licking the bowl. Then, I would get this incredible cleansing feeling after eating it. Now I really enjoy it. I also love the egg but I like the yoghurt too. I do like yoghurt with fruit and a fresh peach is really nice.'


Now, after almost a year of eating the yoghurt and kiwi fruit breakfast, I must say how much I enjoy the Jalna. I really run the spoon around the bowl, scraping up the last morsel. I still weigh the yoghurt - mainly to ensure I get enough! It is too easy to just slosh food about without really taking much notice of it. By weighing the yoghurt, it is as if I am reminding myself that all food matters, it all matters, that I matter, and to get it right!

We went to a Deb Ball tonight, and about an hour before we went I ate a simple egg salad (that wonderful egg cooker is just great!) as I knew we wouldn't be eating before at least 9pm and I would want a few glasses of wine. Seriously, the difference in knowledge and eating since Cohen's is significant. I enjoyed the evening, ate, drank and was merry, without any feeling of bloating or over indulgence. Knowing how to eat is something we are not taught, and look at the mess we got in to!

I looked at the crowd this evening, and the number of significantly overweight young women was frightening. Young, pretty, and overweight. Well, the young and pretty bit soon changes and the overweight slides into obesity and I looked at the mothers and I realise that we are a nation of people who eat badly. We eat as our parents did, but they ate roast dinners once a week, cold cuts on Monday, fish on Friday, it was all home cooked, fresh food, simple meals. Apple crumble for pudding, egg custard, time for bed.

Now, we eat Sunday Lunch 21 times per week. And think it will not make any difference to us, we are all so overweight that 'overweight' has become invisible.

I, at 60 kilos, am at the top of the Healthy Weight Range for my height and age. In comparison with most of the 300 or so people at the Ball tonight, I looked as slim as (some) of the Debs but skinny when compared to most of my age group +/- 10 years.

What, I ask, what, are we doing to ourselves?

Where is the Bronzed Aussie?

Those of us doing Cohen's are carrying the flag not just for ourselves but for social and national change. If we can do it, anyone can do it. The more we talk about and demonstrate this program, even if we inspire just one other person to commit to the change, we have contributed towards the health of a nation.

Yes, I am aware that we have American and Asian and New Zealand and Japanese participants on the Board, the same applies to you. Many people have tried many 'diets', but once you commit to this 'program' your life changes.

I came home this evening quite sad at what I had seen. Perhaps it will take a generation of Type II Diabetes before people start to take obesity as the serious disease it really is.

In the meantime, enjoy your Yoghurt, it really is a 'cleansing' experience

I'm not a real fan of the Natural yoghurt but vary between the Vaalia, the Jalna (green lid) and a nice one by Tamar Valley. It depends on a)availability and b) price. Have been adding a slurp of Fanta zero as suggested on the old forum and quite enjoy it, still love my egg and tomato but do vary between the two. I've decided to have my yoghurt meal monday nights after yoga, figured it is easier to digest before bed (tho' I'll wait up as long as I can) and will be a quick meal rather than coming home and cooking meat/chicken and veg. We'll see how this goes, might ask the yoga instructer whether having yoghurt before class is an option as I'm not too happy about eating so late (we finish at 8.30pm and then 10-15 min trip home).

wow kristine that was truly a great post.

and it got me thinking..


back in my highschool days (about 5-6 year ago ) i was overweight but considered the fattest out of my group of friends...everyone was slim and there was only a small handfull of overweight girls/boys in the classes.

its just a huge shock that now 5-6 years later the number of slim students compared to overweight/obese is smaller!....i even notice it at my work (i work in a bar) that there are young 18 - 19 year old girls who are just plain overweight and not caring..and they are the ones guzzling down 5,6,7 UDLS that have about a gazillion calories and do nothing about it but look horrible in what they are wearing (usually stuff that is way too tight).
I feel a bit mean writing this down but i just felt like i needed to say it...I know im not at goal weight yet and i still may look overweight but hopefully when im slim kitty i can start to inspire a few of my very overweight girls to get off theyre Ar$$es and DO something!
