Ok, prawns, you need to weigh the green prawn meat only, so to do that you have to pull its head off, (do this by gripping it where the head meets the body and twisting it) pull its legs off and break the shell open under the belly to remove it, then pull the tail off and remove the poo shoot down the back of the prawn, once you just have the prawn meat then weigh it. When you cook prawns be very careful not to over cook them as they go tough. I prawn will turn white and orange when it is cooked and it doesn't take long. And they are just so mega yummy, enjoy. Sounds complicated but once you have done a couple it is easy.

They make my hands VERY itchy when they are green so be careful you don't have a reaction. I am fine once they are cooked! SO..........what I have to do is wear plastic gloves when I do the beheading and de-shelling. They are well worth the bother though!!

LOL GUG you made that sound so viscous - pull it's head off, yank its tail off and get the poo thing out! All absolutely true but when you think about it quite barbaric (by the way i love prawns) - imagine if we had to do that to cows or any other meat we eat!

I buy my prawns already cooked - they are boiled, so it is the same process you would do anyway. I peel them, and weigh the meat. Largish prawns are about 10g of meat each. You can have a tsp of mayo a day, so, with some lettuce, you can make a prawn cocktail! Feels a bit fancy (without the fancy fat!!)
Hope this helps!

Yes Laura you do.

As far as my programme goes all food must be weighed pre cooked. Somewhere in here Asy has posted what percentage meat shrinks when cooked so that if you are stuck somewhere and precooked is only option you can use her formula but I can't find it. If anyone else knows where that thread is please post here.

Thanks
Shanara

Hi,

I know this thread was posted a couple of months ago but in case anyone else is interested you can also buy prawns that have had their heads & tails etc taken off and are still raw. Makes it ALOT easier when weighing and cooking.

Oh poo bum

I didn't realise this and I've just been eating my prawns as normal

Now that I know they have to be green, I'll probably stop eating them altogether. Ah well, adios my prawny little friends!

Oh don't give up the prawns bumble. They are too yummy!
Just buy them preshelled but raw ( I buy 1kg frozen and defrost as required). Once weighed out they only take a couple of minutes to cook in the pan with a squirt of oil. I luurve chilli prawns with mayo and a squeeze of lemon.
OMG can't talk about food at this time of night.

Hmmm - might be interesting to by some fresh, freeze them & reweigh, cos I think the thawed weight may be different to the fresh. I made the mistake of buying frozen chicken at the beginning & weighing the thawed weight, till I read somewhere the weights change after being frozen. Hope thats not going to burst anyones bubble too much.

when we say green prawns we mean uncooked
and yes cooked meat weighs about 20% less than uncooked so if you are going to uses precooked you need to deduct 20% of the uncooked weight from the meal allowance ( this is not not not an approved strategy and is not strictly cohens)
once you have weighed food you do not have to check the weight after freezing and defrosting ( this will only lead to tears before bedtime) stick with the original fresh prefreeze weight
you should not be buying frozen food anyway- fresh fresh fresh
hope this makes sense

As the resident chef, I thought I'd put my two-bobs in (again). I agree with Mark - always, always, always buy fresh!!! Weigh, portion out, freeze if you need to. Label it - weight and date. Defrost properly (in fridge the day before) or if you need to in the microwave.

Green prawns refer to 'raw'. It's the technical term and doesn't mean anything else other than 'uncooked'.

Silly terms confuse us all and it's sooo unnecessary! Ask questions guys - if you don't then you may never know. And as far as I'm concerned, there are no stoopid questions when it comes to food. There are some real twits out there trying to make things sound fancier than what they need to be. KISS principle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I knew what 'green prawns' were, I had just been buying them cooked and fresh from Coles, etc. I guess it is kinda stupid when I think about it, but honestly I just hadn't put any thought into it. Cooking prawns?! Who cooks prawns?! Prawns are cooked FOR you, before you buy them! Ha ha.

Silly BB.

I slice the raw prawns lengthwise down the back before cooking - this makes them spiral when you cook them and they take less than a minute in anything - and it makes for more prawns!!!! Mind games with myself!!!
