Hi

Just thought I would start a thread on some recommended reading for life post Cohens...

So far.

French Women Don't Get Fat - an excellent book that helps to change our rituals and relationships around food, and enjoying it...also promotes eating seasonal, fresh foods. Quality over quantity and interesting to note that she states that a protein meal anywhere over 170gm is too much for a woman. Also promotes fresh, preservative free foods. She believes if we are eating foods that are fresh and seasonal we don't CRAVE for things when we eat quality. She also encourages not to buy fresh foods from mass produced supermarkets especially fruit and veg - as it doesn't have the same tastes as something that is in its natural state. Buy the best quality chocolate

Changing Habits, Changing Lives - an Australian book that goes back to the reasons why we are overweight/obese and why it is becoming a problem more so in the last 20 years. Her beliefs are that so many of our foods are processed and changed in manufacturing which has impacted on our metabolism...crux is to get back to foods in it's natural state things like butter, cream, organic stuff, eggs etc. She gives the example of when she was a kid in a school of 600 there was only 1 overweight person she can remember and they ate things like vanilla slices, hot chips with vinegar and didn't put on weight. She strongly recommends pasturised milk only

Both these books discourage the use of artificial sweetners, diet drinks or soft drinks - and get back to natural sugars in small doses eg honey...

Changing your thinking - Sarah Elderman excellent self help book to change our faulty thinking patterns, help with self esteem and goal setting

Failsafe Cookbook - another one that encourages the use of using foods that are preservative and addictive free, lots of recipes

Great idea Hexi, I was about to start the same thread!

A great book I found today:
The Power of Protein
by;Chris Smith
I bought it at BIG W today @ $22.00

It is very similar to the Cohen's principle and has 185 Low-Carb recipies in it with the carb count per serve!

If you are wanting to eat low carb (reccomended 30g per day for weight maintenance) watch the amount of carbs in fruit!!!!
1 medium apple has 18g of carbs- so 2 apples a day and that is over your 30g without adding your vegetables!!

So I am going to cut the fruit out for a week and try some of their yummy recipes and see what happens.

I found that very interesting!

I Know I am not on Maintenance yet but I do think reading

The Beck Diet Solution

different from other diet books because it is a psychological program, not a food plan. Is a great help for getting your thoughts on track. I bought mine from Amazon.com and got it in 2 weeks

LOOK GOOD NAKED-Donna Aston

It is a exercise program she has developed called "MyoKinetics".
It is all about lengthening your major muscle groups and strengthening your core efficiently.

That sound s good and Shell do you have to do your exercise naked on this program ......... for maximum benefit !!! sounds good to me ...... only at this end of the Cohens plan though ...... not for the newbie Cohenites !!!!!

That would be an interesting sight!

I have been practicing the exercises for 2 days now and am enjoying it (not naked! )
It is about technique and doing it slowly & it's not too long to get boring.
You can really feel your muscles!

all good mate sounds like a good program and its good to get back into shape ......... I was keen to start at our little gym again but just have not fired as yet ....but will soon ....... well hope I do sooner than later .. !!!!

Shell, there used to be a popular little book called Isometrics (I think it was subtitled Get fit in 5 minutes a day). I found a couple of sites that describe it. Have a look at http://www.isometric-training.com/ and http://www.sandowplus.co.uk/Competit...witt-intro.htm (this looks like a redo of the original book). It sounds somewhat similar to myokinetics.

Started 11/1/08. Lowest weight reached 63.8 kgs on 10/11/08 and 40 kgs down. Thank you Dr Cohen.
Back again to do it all over again, starting from exactly the same weight as last time.
My health is not good and my doctor is predicting all sorts of nasty things if I don't lose weight.

Back again for the support. Still think the diet and the forum are the best ever, but too old to do it again. Now losing again slowly on maintenance diet. Ticker shows next intermediate goal only (5 kilos).

Pretty much similar in principles AJ.

The MyoKinetics doesn't have so many different exercises-just the main muscle groups.

Ok gonna pop down bookshop and pick up a copy of 'Think Slim' a self hypnosis book by Mark Stephens...

Will read and see how I go

I am no-where near maintenance period but I have heard of an interesting book via the ABC radio to read as soon as I get to a bookstore. It is called "Sweet Poison" by David Gillespie. It discusses about human sugar intake (natural or otherwise), fructose, how most diets contain fructose, and other artificial sweetners and their dangers to health... I personally would like to know more about artificial sweetners...LOL...while I drink my DIET ginger ale!!

Maya put me onto Geneen Roth, and I want to share her work with everyone else.

She has a website http://www.geneenroth.com/index.php where you can find info.

I'm currently reading When Food Is Love, which explains how we deal with issues as a child, to survive and that most emotional eating is dealing with the pain of those issues which keep resurfacing because we want to get rid of the pain, rather than working through the pain and the issue so that we can be free of it!

The other two books I have which I have not read yet, and which seem more hands on with practical tools are Breaking Free from Emotional Eating and Why Weight - A Guide to Ending Compulsive Eating.

More info on the 'Think Slim' book

Apparently the book does the following using 12 transformational keys

1. control emotional eating
2. eliminate limiting beliefs and negative feelings
3. change bad habits
4. set goals and stay motivated
5. alter your thinking at the subconsious level
6. use positive self talk

One of the interesting things he uses is 'Time Line Therapy' where we travel back in time to identify where the negative belief system came from and we banish it from our subconsious then we move to the present and into the future (visually) without it...sorta hard to explain but makes a lot of sense to me...

The book isnt just for people on a 'diet' it is also to change thought patterns for good which will assist in maintenance...

OK I have a couple of books to add to this list.

Weight loss for food lovers, by Dr George Blair-West. He is saying that if you deprive yourself that when you blow it, you will blow it bad. He talks about favourite foods as "high sacrifice foods" and about our relationship with food. He then goes on to discuss the emotional side of eating and ultimately obesity proofing our children. An interesting slant.

The Ultimate Weight Loss Solution by Dr Phil McGraw. Dr Phil has 7 keys to permanent weight loss. Basically, he says get the situation right to lose weight, get your mind right, have a support network and you can lose weight.

I also followed Vee's lead of The Beck Diet Solution by Judith Beck.

I found Geneen Roth's book through eBay. That might be next, or Think Slim.

I just have to rave about the 'Think Slim' book by Mark Stephens and believe it is way better than the Beck Diet Solution...

If you really want to view your relationship with food differently...and feel like you are fighting demons you dont have to!! This book has been by saviour in getting over anxiety and only eating three meals a day...

I wish I had found it earlier but maybe it came into my life just at the right time...sometimes we need to learn the hard way post refeed to get to the point where we can accept ourselves and our new lives without constant obsession

Default The Four Agreements

A little book that I have found invaluable is "The Four Agreements" by Miguel Ruiz. It is not specifically about weight loss however it really helps to work with the emotional turmoil that goes on.

I have read it a number of times and recommend it to both clients and friends. It doesn't take long to read and doesn't ask you to believe in anything yet it can change your life.

Won't spoil the book but just to share one of the agreements is:
Don't make assumptions. After reading this book realised that I was making huge assumptions about what others were thinking and saying. Just being aware and changing that one aspect of my thinking has made a huge difference in my life.

"WHY CAN'T I STOP EATING?'
Recognising, understanding and overcoming food addiction.

This is a book recomended by Vee, which I have finally just recieved.
When I read it, I will report back.

I have also ordered the "Think Slim" book recomended by Hexi.
It sounds like it has some very helpful tools in it.

Great information to help with the "mind" part of our weight loss/weight maintenance which is as important, if not more important, than the actual loosing of the weight.
