Rice cakes
So am would be right to say they aren't allowed? The kids like them anyway so they will be used. Which ones are ok? |

I wouldn't use them as they have corn in them and as you know, corn isn't allowed.
Pass 'em on to the kids |

The plain, thin rice cakes only, Jimbo. I think they look and taste like styrene, but are vastly improved if you put half a mango one one.

Back again to do it all over again, starting from exactly the same weight as last time. My health is not good and my doctor is predicting all sorts of nasty things if I don't lose weight. A thin natural rice cake is great for breakfast, topped with sliced mushies and melted (in m/wave) mozzerella cheese.. yum yum
Also, I was told that the gluten free option, of eating thin rice cakes, can actually help the weight to 'get off' faster, than if you eat the wheat laden saladas etc... just a thought. Ruby

I think I might try this one. I have the Real Foods Original Corn Thins. Are these the right ones?

Hi Chailee,
Corn thins are not allowed on the program. They have to be the thin rice (only) cakes. Nat |

Oops - forgot to add that you need to remember that 1 thin rice cake is equal to 2 other crackers (Saladas etc)

Hi Jimbo
I previously had the Calrose Rice Cakes which are white rice, but now have the Coles Rice Cakes which are simply puffed brown rice in a compressed cake They are great for making mini-pizzas, and for putting in the bowl before you pour a curry over - that way you have curry 'n' rice - which is a lot nicer than curry 'n' crispbread! By themselves they are not so thrilling - and they squeak against the teeth while being chewed - but with something hot they really come into their own! So try the 'You'll Love Coles' Rice Cakes, they are a lot more tasty and significantly more versatile when cooking than crispbread Cheers Kristine |

Hi Asy
The Coles rice cakes which I have got are unfortunately, now that I look at the packet, 10grams each but are labelled 'thick'. I don't have a wrapper from the Calrose rice cakes to compare what their 'thin' cakes weighed The Coles rice cakes don't look much different from my memory of the Calrose rice cakes, I ate a very stale Calrose cake from the back of the pantry the other day but didn't keep the wrapper However, the principle of rice cake + curry = curry 'n' rice, and nowhere in my program is the weight of crispbread or rice cake mentioned so it's hard to make a comparison So what is the recommended serve weight of rice cake? If it is 15 gms then the Coles cakes would be within weight no matter whether they are described as 'thick' or 'thin'. If it is 10 gms then I will weigh them and break off the excess. Cheers Kristine |

The programme does say that 2 crackers = 15g. (roughly).
Must admit, I'm not entirely sure you can have brown rice crackers, either. They're supposed to be 'plain rice crackers' and I know you definately can't have wholemeal saladas. It would be something I'd have to check on Monday if you wanted me to. asy.

My program refers to 'rice cakes' certainly not 'rice crackers' which would be those Japanese type things
The only ingredient in the rice cakes is rice. Which is why they squeak so loudly, it is straight out cellulose, nothing else! They certainly look like steamed, puffed rice grains and the brown rice has a nice, nutty flavour And no weights are mentioned anywhere, just portions, eg 2 vita weat, 1 rice cake (thin), etc and there is no mention of white or brown rice at all. I didn't buy the Coles rice cakes, they are in pantry of their own accord. If anyone has any 'thin' rice cakes about and can weigh them that would be good, I'll break a bit off the 'thick' ones But I notice that Salada are on the list whereas they weren't allowed previously ..... and, of course, Brussels Sprouts are no longer an approved food (sob) I rather enjoy the occasional sprout! cheers Kristine |

Yeah, that's a typo, I meant rice CAKES not crackers, sorry.
I did mean that brown wasn't mentioned, but I wondered whether they were allowed coz wholemeal saladas aren't. Just wondering out loud. I don't have any rice cakes here that suit (just full size ones with chilli flavour that my son eats - yuck!), but I have some at work, so if no-one's weighed one by Monday I'll post a weight then. I wouldn't worry too much about it over the weekend, I don't really think there will be that much difference, just wondering... asy.

the right rice cakes
Hi all,
I may as well add my 2c !! My consultant actually reported that she has enquired of the good doctor himself, and was told the following rice cakes are the only acceptable rice cakes on the plan; those being: SUNRICE THIN RICE CAKES [ORIGINAL] which are in a predominantly yellow & 150g package. The ingredients are stated as: 99% puffed brown rice & (1%) salt. Each thin rice cake weighs approx. 6 grams, has 23 KCal & only 5g of carbs. Apparently, along with being the preferred (only) rice cake on the plan, these are the only brand also made from non-GM Rice. I hope this helps Kristine. regards, Ruby

Generic branding
G'Day
Well, I now have two packets of rice cakes 'You'll Love Coles', and 'SunRice' Both have exactly the same ingredients ie Brown Rice 100% Both have exactly the same Nutritional Information I would hazard a guess that they are the same (except for the Caution on the SunRice packet that rice cakes may ignite if heated in a toaster or grill!) The generic house brands such as 'You'll Love Coles' are not made by Coles, they are made for Coles by established manufacturers Thanks, new_ruby for weighing a thin rice cake = 6 gms Now that I have used the rice cakes as 'rice' in a bowl I am amazed at how I didn't do this before. And they are so noisy! Snap, crackle 'n' pop as the hot liquid soaks in and the cake separates into individual 'rice bubbles'. Taste great and play a good tune, too! Using rice cakes has meant that I will be making more stews and curries - these were a bit ordinary just by themselves in a bowl, and salty crispbread just doesn't cut it with a curry. Cheers Kristine |
