Default Going Camping-prepared food suggestions please!

We heading up to the Murray for Cup Week-end. (Murray River, borders Victoria and New South Wales in Australia)(Melbourne Cup - watch Melbourne get carried away with a horse race, we even make it a public holiday!)

We'll be camping for 3 nights. Has anyone done this on Cohens before??
When I come back home deviation free I will be thrilled!!

I'm all good for yoghurt and fruit for breakfast. It is probably the easiest to pre-measure and make good use of plastic containers.

Has anyone got any suggestions that will be good to take already cooked and packed?

We'll have a gas cook top and frypan, saucepan so I can re-heat things, but I don't really want to cook from scratch while I will be preparing food for my two boys and hubby.

All suggestions are appreciated!

I'll hard boil an egg for curried egg on crispbreads...that's filling and yummy.

Do you think I should also measure out veggies, bundle up in gladwrap and label the weight?

Feeling determined, but a little overwhelmed by all the extra organisation at the moment!!

Sounds like you will be near Echuca maybe?
I'd pre weigh salad serves and bag up into those sandwhich zip lock bags.
Tuna slices in cans are nice and easy for lunch.
You could make up kebabs for the BBQ with your protein and veg allowance for dinner.

My only advice is to take extra tins of tuna and a lettuce, just in case your plans go astray.......a few people have been caught out with camping, made all the preparations and what not then something went a miss

Yeh I'd say be as prepared as you can. Pre-weighing is an excellent idea...but take some portable scales just in case.

Tuna slices are pretty good

Love the kebabs idea too!

I think it was BF-Dubbs that went camping? My memory is crappola but I have definitely read of people going camping and being successful! Don't let yourself deviate or make excuses... just be on plan, because that's what you are... on plan, right? You can definitely do it!!

All good advice here - and it sounds like you are well prepped for what you will need to do anyways.

Another option if you have it there (but certainly more for emergencies probably as it sounds like you will be sorted), is the "chop chop chicken" in a can (I know, I know) with "lite" mayo. My consultant was on Cohens after the February 2011 earthquake, and had no power or running water, and just got by with the 90gm tins and also tuna tins and veges and tinned asparagus. But if you take your scales, pre-weigh some veges, and take your tinned tuna, and maybe pre-cook and freeze or just freeze your protein portions raw (like I do anyway - buy in bulk!) and take it in an esky, you should be fine for a few days.

Will be almost as simple as being at home - except you get the fun of camping too!

Hope you have a great time.

Hi Relles! Yes! Not far from Echuca! It looks like Tocumwal is the closest town.

You guys are awesome. Thank-you.

Check to the ~

Zip lock bags, tins of tuna and lettuce,
and the kebabs are a great way to join in with the campfire cooking!

McBell, I have never tried chop-chop chicken. I don't think I have ever had chicken in a can...I will mentally and supermarketly explore this and report back.

Yes, I freeze my raw measured portions of protein as well, so I'll throw a bunch of those in the esky too.
And, yes, I was trying to avoid it, but I hear the wise~ness in this and will take the scales.

Thanks again Lovelies, I might try and post a Camping menu plan or something if I get so organised!
I think the feta curry cauliflower soup might have to be on there because I've just made this for the first time for lunch and Oh My Gawd it is divine. NomNomNom.

Hi,

We are going camping for 4 days this weekend and I've planned out the menu for the family with some modifications for me. My menu is looking like this (pretty much the same as home):

Friday dinner: Chicken boob, coleslaw, crackers & apple. Probably Sprite zero while the others are grogging.

Saturday: B: Eggs, veges & cracker
L: Chicken (cooked night before), coleslaw, orange & crackers
D: Steak, veges, crackers & apple

Sunday: B: Eggs, veges, cracker
L: Steak (from last night), veges, orange & crackers
D: Steak, coleslaw, apple & crackers

Monday: B: Eggs, veges, cracker

I can't do tuna or rat in a can (canned chicken) - even thinking about it makes me gag! So, I've got to cook the meat each day - hence cooking tomorrow's lunch at the same time as today's dinner.

I'm just going to go with the expectation that there will be no deviations. Same old, same old just in a different location.

Good luck with the camping - hope you have fun!

Emembee, that sounds like you are super organised! Thanks for sharing your plan. I am half way there...done the shopping, tonight I will be measuring!

Thanks everyone for your support! I have a friend going camping with us who has done Cohens, now she is doing paleo, so we are going to support each other as we prepare our own food and not be tempted by the camping situation!! Feeling strong!! (I realise I feel weak when I am hungry, so best avoid that eh!)

Have a great week-end everyone.

Hi Guys,

I'm checking back in after a successful week-end away.
Your meal suggestions really helped.

I didn't go as far as bagging up veggie portions and salad but I wish I had. There were so many flies!

Unfortunately we all contracted a gastro bug which put things into a bit of a wobbly. I guess this was an incidental deviation as I probably lost at least 2 meals with no desire to put them back in again. Thank goodness it was just a quick bug with a shortish recovery.

Anyway, I did my best and I am proud of myself for that.

Thanks again for your support everyone.
