Default Bread / crackers question?

I'm just wondering while on refeed if I decide to substitute my bread allowance for crackers on any particular day does that mean that on a day when I'm supposed to have 3 slices of bread I could in fact have 9 crackres
(1 slice of bread = 3 crackers) or should I just be reverting back to my original plan where I was allowed 5 ??
Thanks in advance

My Understanding is that you would substitute one for three. So yes, nine crackers.

Gives you an idea just how bad bread is for you as a starch! Don't forget, those crackers are a lot lower in carbs than most crackers are. So, while the quantity is large, the carb hit isn't as high as the bread is. If you can do the bread though, it's best to go that way just so you can see how it affects your body. If you steer clear of it during refeed, the first time you get caught out once on maintenance and are not able to control what's available and you get put into a position where you need to eat bread it could be a shock to your system. Who knows, at least now you are in a position to find out in a controlled environment, which is why Dr. C introduces it in refeed instead of letting you whack yourself without any knowledge of what can happen on refeed. Some can do the bread and not have any problems, other bloat up in a matter of hours. You won't know unless you try.

I have a question.

I was asking my consultant about the scenario of gaining 1kg during refeed problem. What I meant is what if I gain 1kg the first time, go back two days and then gain another 1kg which means I should stop refeed immediately. That means my after refeed weight can actually be 2kg HEAVIER! I DON'T WANT THAT TO HAPPEN!!!

She told me if I really want to prevent gaining the 1kg and going back 2 days, I just need to cut down my carbs for the next few refeed days.

OK.....that means for carbs, I can choose NOT to follow 100% of the refeed plan. Is that the correct way to go through refeed?

Have you gained 1 kg during refeed yet? You should follow refeed as it is intended to be done. If by doing so, you then gain 1 kg, you go back two days. If you go back two days, the odds of you actually gaining 1 kg over night are rather slim, in fact, you will probably lose the majority of that kg over the next 2 days. If after two days, when your dietary amounts increase substantially again, you then regain the 1 kg, then refeed is done. To lose the 1 kg or 1+ if there was a little left from the first time, just go back two days and stay there until you lose the excess and then continue into maintenance. You will know from that point (the two days back) how much you can consume and let that be considered as the final day of refeed. Easy-peasy. Some people get lucky and end up with a shorter refeed that way. Nothing wrong with it at all.

However, if you don't eat all that is on refeed, you will not know how much your body can actually handle. That's why it's so important. It's the most important part of the whole programme.

haha, LM!

I am the same! I love love LOVE my saladas! I am at the stage where I am allowed 3 slices of bread a day, but I only have one, I can't quit my crackers! LOL!!! If I had 3 slices of bread, I would only be allowed 1 little teeny tiny salada square!!! And if I don't have any bread I can have 14 little teeny tiny salada squares!!! LOL!!! (at least that's my understanding of it all, eek)

Mmm, crackers

Question - does the 2.5 hours between crackers still apply in refeed????

Edit: and can we still only have 2 at once, or can we have the 3 that would have been the bread equivalent if we aren't having the bread???

Hey Jlou!!

Congrats on refeed! Whoo Hoo!!!

My understanding was that if you can have more than one slice of bread at a time (which would blow our 2.5hr cracker rule) it would mean we can ditch the cracker rule altogether.

When I was on refeed, I started just eating my crackers when I felt like them.

Edit: and can we still only have 2 at once, or can we have the 3 that would have been the bread equivalent if we aren't having the bread???
So... my answer to this quessie would be yes

Ciao,

Have a question regarding this, my refeed says on day one to have 2 cb and 1 slice of bread, so my question is are the cb in addition to the orgininal program?
As I read it anything on the refeed is in addition to your original program just want to check that this is correct.

Thanks
Wendy

Hi Wendy

My understanding was you would only have the 1 bread and 2 CB in total for the day, Maybe wrong but seems plenty of food for me anyway,

Hi Wendy, Without seeing your programme, in theory, on day one you are exchanging cb for the slice of bread (I'm saying exchange because on my plan I had 3 x cb a day).
I know a slice of bread = 3cb's but I am not sure how many you had on your plan. It isn't in addition to what you had previously. If you didn't have the bread you could have the 2cb's as instructed, and another 3 to replace the bread.
Enjoy refeed, so close to the END..........wow mega exciting!

Hi Wendy, nope, it is 1 bread and 2 crackers for the day. (This is how I read it). You will see as the bread portions increase, there are 'no' crackers. Check with your clinic, but pretty sure I"m right. You will probably find you won't manage to have your full allowance of crackers as well as additional crackers anyway.

Ooooh interesting...

When reading my refeed plan I read this differently...

My refeed says you go by your normal plan allowances and add on anything in refeed.

So, on day 1 I am allowed 1x bread and 2 crackers... I take this as meaning ON TOP of my usual allowance. My usual cracker allowance is 5, so I add the 2 extras and now I can have 7 serves of crackers... If I want to have bread, I minus 3 cracker serves (as per the bread rules). I never really thought about what happens when I can have 3 bread but no extra crackers as 3 breads is worth more than my usual allowance, so that is confusing... but if I use the "no cracker" allowance on refeed (and not 'on top' of my usual allowance) and choose not to have bread than my cracker collumn still says "none", so if I did take the new refeed cracker allowance as the only crackers I am allowed and did skip bread, following refeed rules only, I would have ZERO bread or crackers for the day... and I don't think that is right.

Sorry, that is badly worded and confusing...but nonetheless, my opinion is cracker allowance on refeed is ON TOP of your usual plan cracker allowance and bread is only ever minused from cracker allowance when you want to have it, not added in when you don't (so the fact that when I am allowed 3x bread and yet no extra crackers, if I chose not to have the bread I don't just get to add 3 serves of crackers to an allowance of 'none', still have to stick by my original program cracker allowance).

Gah, confusing to explain!

Well actually Missy my refeed states things differently..I am of the opinion that THE MOST CRACKERS YOU WILL EVER END UP WITH IS 9 (which I read...somewhere...)
Which coincidentally equals 3 slices of bread
The reason it states this is that some people already had say 8 crackers where most of us were on 5 for the whole first part of the program..and the most any of us go up to is 9
Also on day 1 my refeed says
Have only 5 as allowed on original eating plan
on day 2 it says
have 1 slice of bread and 2 crispbread
(thereby automatically reducing the 5 down to 2 to allow for the bread)

I completely understand WHY you would read it that way..it is poorly set out as far as how they mention the crispbread - they should probably state it another way then it wouldnt be so confusing!!

Ahh yeh well that is very confusing... As I have never heard the 'maximum number of crackers nine' thing.

So, if I have 1 bread and 2 crackers on my refeed plan... I can eat 1x bread and 2 crackers... or I can have 5 crackers only (3 in place of bread plus the "2" on refeed plan)? What happened to my extra 2 cracker serves? So basically that would be just normal plan amounts of carby crackers??? That is SOOOO badly worded in the plan if that is the case! You would think after however many years it has been around that they could actually explain it properly!! Seems like a pretty important thing to not get right. I have had too many crackers for 4 days... plus the 18 days I did refeed for the first time.

Yes, it is REALLY BADLY WORDED - but I think that I have read the total of 9 crackers somewhere and also the clinic mentioned it..the reason I remember it is that they said that those who were allowed 8 only increased to 9 on refeed and I remember thinking wow that is unfair for them.
Oh bugger about you already having them - there are a few instances where the refeed program causes issues because of poor wording - I mentioned another to the clinic..and apparently they mention it to the powers that be all the time, but they wont change it.

Oooh, I'm still not sold.

I just re-read my plan...

Section 3. Following your refeeding program
Point number 2. "Add the quantity of carbohydrate indicated on each day of the refeeding program"

Now, this is written 1 page after...
Section 2: The rules during The refeeding Program
Point number 1; "The refeeding program is an extension of your original Eating Program. Therefore, the rules you followed while you were on your Eating Program are still valid, unless specifically changed by the Refeeding Program.

MY UNDERSTANDING of this then is that if during refeed I was to reduce my crackers from my original plan amount it would have said "minus x serves of crackers, but instead where it says carbs it either says '2 crispbreads' (as in extra on top of original plan) or 'none' (as in none extra on top of original plan) and as stated before things written in your refeed plan are on top of your usual allowance, unless it says to change it specifically... and it does say later on to reduce some original program amount, like old protein when you add milk or to minus some bread if you want alcoho, so I think the rule still applies to crackers/crispbreads/bread.
