Hi bails,

Not what my Mum said !! Have the water come to the boil, at which point you lower the egg into it, then 3 minutes from there.

Of course, if you started with cold water with the egg in it, it could take 6 - 7 mins to reach boiling, then a further 3 to cook the egg....

I dunno. I'd have to Google it too, to see WHY 10 minutes. But, I think I'll leave that to the cooks,

Hmm, I drop into boiling water also, & about 4.5 mins is perfect at a light boil
Maybe some other reason for the 10 mins?

What I was taught --- and perfect each time..
Egg in pot with cold, salted water.
Bring to a rolling boil.
Turn off the heat.
Let sit for 11 mins. (why 11 min? I dont know!)
Then its cooked, and shell peels off easily, and no greyinsh film to the egg yolk.

I guess everyne has their own way of boiling eggs! You'd think it was easy ahhaha.

oh my, this is the first time i saw a procedure for boiling an egg. as for me, i fill the pot with water and place the egg, then i'll leave it for a while without timing so sometimes my sister is scolding me because the water in the pot already dries up

I was taught similar to MM....egg in cold pot, covered...bring to boil, once it's at rolling boil turn off heat and let egg remain in covered pot for 5-8 mins...comes out perfect each time.

i should have known not to trust google - i got a whole heap of varying answers on there too!

anyways, 10mins in boiling water seems to work fine... it's enough time to run around and get everyone their toast

Well just to complicate it, it really depends on whether you are wanting it hard or soft boiled, you know with runny bits in the middle still.

I do 4 minutes in boiling water for soft boiled and whatever comes out for hard boiled, usually about 10 minutes......or so
