A few questions regarding allowed food
Hi everyone,
Ive got a few questions regarding some of the food we are allowed (or not allowed) to have.... Firstly - Calamari. Ive always taken calamari to be the white tubes that come already cleaned (and sometimes cut into rings already) and ready for cooking. When I went to the fish shop the other day, I realised that those white tubes that I previously bought as calamari are actually some type of squid. True calamarie was a pink looking octopussy thing (with tenticles and all) that you still have to clean. Now Im one of those ppl that really couldnt be bothered cleaning the calamari and Im not even sure how!! What I am wondering is what other ppl are eating. Are you eating the already cleaned white tubes that are squid or does it really have to be true calamari?? Secondly - Ricotta. Does it have to be low fat ricotta? Do you usually buy it fresh from the deli section of the supermarket or is it ok to buy the low fat ricotta that comes in the tubs? I bought a tub of "Mama Lucia Cheese" brand Low fat smooth ricotta. Its ingredients are just whey, milk, salt and food acid (330). Nutrition wise it contains 2.2g of total fat and 3.2g carbs total per 100g. Does this sound OK and Cohens friendly? To me, Calamari is the white tube things you described.
Having worked in a fish monger's many years ago (when I was a teenager) we always called those white squid things 'Calamari' and I believe that's what's on the programme. It's certainly what I ate on the programme. Ricotta can be the low fat or ordinary, I remember asking that question myself early in the programme. asy

I have ricotta all the time but i do get the low fat one from the meat deli section i just think that it is fresher. On the list it does not say to get low fat but i do. I love it i have it on my salada and it is delicious. I have that most days i was going to try not to have it every day but i still do i love it. I do not like seafood so i cant help you with the calamari. Have a great day Annie |

Here's a bit of trivia for you that I picked up on a cooking show somewhere regarding calamari
Calamari is only considered to be 'Calamari' when a squid tube is cut into rings. Otherwise it's just plain old squid. The other calamari that you described sounds to be octupus and not calamari - seems the shop have got there wires crossed...??? As for ricotta - I use both fresh deli style and from the tub. Sometimes for a sweet dessert I squeeze some orange juice and sprinkle with cinnamon, mix together and bake for about 20mins. It's delish!!!! You can also use some of your crispbread allowance and use as a base and make a 'Cohens' cheesecake. (I prefer to have without) Cheers MiniMe |
