Default Question re Cohens & Depression

Hi All,

I have read through a few threads in this section but can't really find what I am looking for, so I decided to put out the call for help.

I was diagnosed with depression a little over a year ago after suffering with it for about 3 years (discovered after cognitive behavioral therapy). I got medicated and have been feeling great.....until recently.

I know that Cohens works on serotonin, and so do the anti-deps that I take, and what I want to know is this: can this cause the depression to get worse?

For the last 3 weeks my mental state has been in steady decline, without my noticing until tonight (but that's pretty normal anyway) and then I was putting my dinner in the oven and accidentally dropped it on the floor, which sent me into a horrible emotional state. I cried for an hour. I know it is absolutely stupid to cry over such a little thing, but it has made me realise I am not good any longer.

I guess what I really want to know is if anyone else has experienced this? I really feel like I am back to the lowest point before I was medicated (and I am so anti-medication it was a HUGE thing for me to go there) and I am actually really worried.

I would really love to know if anyone has any knowledge about these things or has experienced similar.

Hoping you are all well,

Alli

Hi Ali,

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you either. however, I have been on a roller coaster of emotions, and crying at the dardest things, and getting annoyed at the stupidist things.

I know its not detox, coz thats over and done with, for me I think its actually having to deal with emotions, instead of eat and drink them away. Its very foreign feeling for me.

I know its not the same as what you must be feeling, but just thought I'd share that I've notced myself being "all over the shop" a little bit too, and what I figure it is.

Hope you feel good soon lovely lady xx

Hi Alli i take what my kids call happy pills.Haha
I suffer from panic attacks and anxiety.ive taken this medication for about 9 years and did put this on my application form.
The medication is supposed to make you feel good raise your seretonin levels and has certainly worked for me.I certainly havent had a panic attack or suffered anxiety in a long time.
Now the forum knows my medical history cause i have just put it out there.Might help you or others though..

I do wonder how they would measure my true seretonin levels..
Hugs to you.Have a good sleep. x

Hi Alli...

You should probably make a visit with your Doc.

Our hormones go crazy on this program, so your medication might need tweaking or something... and as Mich said, having to deal with our emotions head on instead of suppressing them with food/sweets. It can be pretty confronting, let alone if you're already suffering depression.

Another thing, maybe you need to do something nice for yourself... a reward for being on the program. In many ways the program is SO easy, but it is also time consuming and a a big effort/commitment.

Alls well - time off work has been granted so I get Monday and Tuesday off, doctors appointment has been made, therapy is not an option (I know it works for a lot of people, but I am not one of them). I have a theory - amazing how much clearer ones mind can be after a good dummy spit and sleep - so will see what the good old doc thinks on Monday.

Anyway, feeling a bit stupid for posting this anyway, so I'm off! Have a good day everyone.

Don't feel stupid for feeling this way! I actually was on anti deps for a number of reasons over the years from my mother's death, post natal, relationship breakdown. Part of the reason I chose to do cohens was to release myself from the fat hell I was in and in the process release myself from the up down merry go round. As all the others have said it's about what your head is saying it's fighting you becoming who you really are. It's scary to suddenly have attention. In the past when I lost weight it was attention from women as much as men that freaked me out. Women tend to be more critical whereas men just like what they see. They don't give you those 'what about stretch marks and excess skin' talk down tos. Sorry to rave on I will get to the point. The point is I'm actually feeling a bit loopy myself atm. I made the choice to no longer take meds since starting the first time back in october and I seem to go up and down, but I'm not prepared to be on meds they have more detrimental effects on me than being without. My doctor insists that I should be on them but everyone has their own path hey? Like you I can't do therapy because quite frankly I think I would freak the therapist out and they would then be in therapy! haha. Anyway maybe just a change in meds is in order? It will work out though . I think on a side note, you have had such great rapid loss straight up and now you have a plateau it's messing with your head and taking you to places you didn't need to go. Always good to have a rant here though, it's safe and non judgmental thank goodness!!!
