Question Fish Oil Question

I have a query regarding fish oil capsules. It says in the plan that you are to take no more than 1 capsule of fish oil or flax oil daily. The thing is, for a long time I have been taking approx 3-4 or 4-5 fish oil capsules a day, to help with joint/arthritis/heart health.

I've only been on the program one week but after about the 5th day, I've noticed pain in my knee (where I fell on it a few times in the past). I first noticed it when I was descending stairs at work and its been a little sore since.

I'm a bit worried that dropping the fish oil to only one capsule a day may not have been a good idea for the joints. Afterall my poor joints have been carrying my excess weight for a long time. Physiotherapists always recommend fish oil caps for your joints, and doctors recommend it for heart health, etc.

Does anyone know why we are limited to only one fish oil capsule a day? And how does this affect weight loss? I know that losing weight takes the stress off your joints but I'm not at my goal weight yet and I'm still carrying extra weight on my joints.

I asked the Dr C clinic and they just told me that Dr C doesn't elaborate on this.
Any comments on the use of fish oil would be most appreciated.

Many thanks, Miss O.

Hi Miss O

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, this is a tough one. I can't answer your question but it is a bit of a dilemma that I will direct Asy to.

One thing to keep in mind is that Dr Cohen himself says health first. This is challenging when that seems to be at odds with the programme. Unfortunately it happens sometimes. It really is up to you to monitor your pain levels and I think that you can actually ask your clinic to check with Dr Cohen - perhaps he can recommend something else that you could take.

It may be that it will slow your weight loss. However if the pain is bad for you this may be a trade off that you have to make. You really need to be guided by your body and by your clinic. I will ask for some more expert advice than i am able to give.

Enjoy the journey,
Shanara

I wanted to take more than one fish oil tablet (cos I worried about hair loss) and my consultant told me that the reason we are limited to one is that our bodies take the oil and use it in the same way that we would 'fat' and is somewhat counter intuitive to the Cohens plan... if that makes sense?

So, as far as I know that is the reasoning behind the limitation, but I would definitely ask your consultant what they think about your situation... being that it is about pain or not some silly like me wanting to take more for a 'cosmetic' reason.

Thanks Lil Doll - that makes sense. I think it's the Omega 3's, etc in the oil that helps, so I've decided to increase my intake of tuna meals. I'll see how this goes for a while.
thanks again.

Fish Oil and Weight Loss

Fish oil has popularized as an aid in losing weight. Research conducted by Professor Peter Howe at the University of South Australia has shown that fish oil improves the efficacy of exercise in attempts to reduce weight. Volunteers who were given fish oil in their diet showed greater weight loss as compared to those who did not regularly consume fish oil. Exercise combined with fish oil had a positive effect on body shape and composition of the participating patients.

Caution on dosage of fish oil

An excessive dosage of fish oil can have adverse allergies and side effects on the body. Furthermore, fish oil can be problematic if you have certain conditions so it is necessary to consume fish oil supplements cautiously. You should consult a doctor or physician for the exact dosage of fish oil you should take. Moreover, fish oil can be consumed in various forms. These include eating the fish directly by baking, roasting, frying, grilling, broiling, or smoking it. You can also consume it in the form of concentrated dietary supplements like liquid, tablet, capsule, pill, or soft gels. Also, there are various pharmaceutical grades of fish oil. It is not necessary to constantly consume pharmaceutical-grade fish oil or even fish oil supplements. You should also consult your doctor to confirm your mode of consuming fish oil and your overall need for it in your diet.

I think this information will help you

Hey Miss Optimistic Growing up I've always heard that fish oil was very beneficial for your joints here skin it is true that you have to listen to your body because your body always knows what it needs and you got to trust that.
