Painful tailbone
I need some reassurance, this past week I have barely been able to sit down due to a extremely painful tailbone. It throbs and numbs when I sit for 30 mins or more. Has anyone else experienced the same problem? Reading some threads I know that you can experience back aches when you are close to goal, but I am still 20kgs off so that is not the reason. Looking forward to your replies. NBS x |

Yup, not unusual...
You've lost the big cushion you used to sit on! Seriously, I had exactly the same problem, your coccyx is not used to any pressure on it, it's literally been padded to the waahoo for years, and now it's having to actually have some pressure on it. It WILL settle down, as all the ligaments and nerves get used to the pressure. One thing I will say is be VERY careful for a while when you're sitting down on hard surfaces especially. I sat down a little TOO hard onto a brick wall and dislocated my coccyx. And I gotta tellya a dislocated bum is a pain in the @r$e. Promise! Hope this helps. asy.

Thanks Asy, good to know it's par for the course.
I'm thinking I need a 'donut pillow' to sit on...... I will just put up with it and hope it sorts itself out soon. have a great weekend, Tanya. |

That's exactly what my doctor suggested!
Mind you, I never went that course... Couldn't stand the "granny" tag of the whole thing... I was VERY careful sitting down for quite a long time, and haven't been horseriding again since asy.

I recall Faithy talking about "throwing" herself into a chair/sofa/whatever. Something like, if you didn't throw yourself, you wouldn't "fit" - something like that.
I guess "throwing" yourself can lead to these little coccyx dramas May be better to practise NOT doing it - from today ..... Koh

Ha Ha. That explains it. Not a bad problem to have though. As I sail I have invested in a pair of padded pants for the boat. I never needed them before but boy do I now.
The other issue Im having which is by no means a problem is I dont need as much room to squeeze past people in the train. Im always waiting for them to make more room for me and they look at me like Im crazy!!! As I said its a good issue. |

Hi NBS,
I have had a sore tailbone also. Especially when i sit down and then try to get back up!!! I actually got the courage to go to my doctor about this as when my husband felt my bone we both could feel like a lump at the end of it. My doctor has done a x-ray and came back saying it wasnt bone, then had a ultrasound done on it and they can see it is inflamed so now they have ordered a ct scan to be done which I am getting done next week. So dont play around with it if it is really sore do get it checked as it can be something more serious!!! |

Mel, thanks for letting me know about your sore tailbone too. This week if it is not getting better then I will definitely see my doctor. Thanks for the advice.

HI Nance, I notice I cant sit for as long due to less padding on my rear end and I can really feel bones that I hadnt had contact with for a while when I sit!

Hi NBS
I too had a sore tailbone for months. I was really worried it was something serious and was going to go to the doctor. The actual bone didn't feel right, it felt too big and it ached for hours after sitting for too long. I knew all the weight had disappeared from my bum first, but didn't think that it would have this affect. I never went to a doctor about it because other injuries took my attention off my tailbone, I had even forgotten about it by the time the other injuries healed. It feels natural now and has settled down to the point where I rarely feel it. Looking back, and after reading Mel's post, I was probably silly not to go to the doctor about it. But if it starts hurting again I definitely will. But either way you are not alone with the tailbone thing. Hope yours has settled down now too. FAB |

Re: Painful tailbone
I've treated many people with tailbone pain. It's something Chiropractors do especially well. Has to do with the position of your pelvis and lower vertabrae.
Physical therapy won't help much, and that's what the normal MD will send you to. Find a good DC from an insurance website (not the yellow pages!) Good luck. |

Re: Painful tailbone
It is usually caused by trauma to the tailbone or surrounding area, such as a backward fall or childbirth. On rare occasions, an infection or tumor can also cause pain in the coccyx. Hope this helps!
