Frida Kahlo was a famed Mexican painter who was made popular by her self-portraits. She is admired by many as a feminist icon.
She began painting following an accident where the bus she was taking with a friend collided with a car, impaling her through her hip. Kahlo suffered extreme injuries, leaving her with a long road to recovery.
During her recovery following the 1925 accident, she began painting and finished her first self-portrait the next year. Only a few years later, Kahlo married Diego Rivera, a well-known Mexican muralist.
They, for a brief period, travelled together to different countries, making a notable stop in New York City in 1933 when Rivera created a mural that included the depiction of communist leader Vladimir Lenin.
After a while, the two lived their lives rather separately thanks to Rivera’s infidelity and multiple affairs, one of which took place with Kahlo’s sister Cristina. As a response to his betrayal, Kahlo cut off most of her hair. Her image is often characterized by flowers, a uni-brow, light make up, and heavy blush. This non-traditional look caused her to become the posterchild for modern feminism.
