Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
I am so shocked as I love having this yoghurt for breakfast every morning and now I feel as though I have been cheating. Does anyone's program specify how much sugar is acceptable in youghurt? I think the program should point this variance in yoghurts out to us. I will certainly be doing some research at the supermarket next week. Just have to get rid of the week's worth of Mundella yoghurt that I have in the fridge. Soba |

Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
Well the limit on added sugar in yogurt is easy: zero, 0, zip, nought, not a grain. So it is easy, low fat or fat free, with zero sugar! 11.2grams per 100grams is a LOT of sugar, thats almots 20grams of pure insulin spiking sugar in your 175grams of yogurt, whilst it is not cheating (because you didnt know it) it is however big deviation and would really limit your daily fat-burning. However what can you do, just only dump it down the drain, and go and get the correct stuff. Others can post their recommendations for where you live.

Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
I've said it before, but it bears repeating.
I use the Green Lid Jalna Yoghurt. It's in a 1kg tub too, which lasts 5.5 days for me. That makes it under $1 a day. I dissolve a few Hermesetas tabs in a teaspoon of hot water then mix it through the yoghurt, and I just love it. This morning, for the first time in about 6 months, I microwaved half a chopped up apple and threw it in to the yoghurt with a little nutmeg and cinnamon on top. I don't think I'll bother again, but this morning I was really hungry as I slept lots after the show yesterday evening, went to bed early, and was up at 5am, so by 7 I was starving! Go the Green Lidded Jalna!!! asy

Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
Thanks for the recommendations and advice asy and LF.
After going to three supermarkets I found the green lid Jalna and had it for breakfast today - it is really yummy. I could only find the small tubs and the store only had 5 - so I bought them all. I also gave away the 4 tubs of high sugar yoghurt I had and am now feeling much better about this situation. Hoping it will make a difference over the next few weeks. Soba |

Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
Bought the Valia tonight to try.
It is higher fat at 2g than LF Jalna which is 0.1g. Essentially the Jalna has no fat but I understand they have to say 0.1% as they cannot be 100% sure. But check this out. I always hated special K and it made me hyper. I was looking for the recent report that obesity increases a number of cancers by 50% to 122%. This is scary and sad. Thankfully my daughter 19months only eats home made porridge and loves it. Peter Food companies cereal offenders on sugar Jon Ungoed-Thomas, London May 07, 2007 FOOD companies have doubled the amount of sugar they add to some of their most popular products -- including soups and cereals -- in an attempt to attract sweet-toothed customers. Some of the biggest increases in sugar have been in breakfast cereals, and even wholemeal bread has become far sweeter. It now routinely contains nearly a teaspoonful of sugar in every three slices. Experts warn that the trend, which can be traced back over three decades, is likely to get worse as sugar prices fall and salt levels are reduced by health watchdogs. In 1978, Kellogg's Special K had 9.6g of sugar per 100g, but this has now nearly doubled to 17g -- a similar level to vanilla ice-cream. Soaring consumption of sugar has been blamed for high levels of tooth decay and increases in diabetes. Scientists have implicated it in rising rates of obesity. Ian Tokelove, a spokesman for the Food Commission, which campaigns for healthier foods, said: "Most of us are eating too much sugar, but we are being swamped with it in our food. "We naturally have a sweet tooth and manufacturers have been quick to use that to try to increase sales in a crowded marketplace. It's cheap to use and it's been one of the first things to be added when companies want to make a product a bit different." Food companies maintain that sugar forms a useful part of a balanced diet, but an article in the British Medical Journal in 2005 warned: "Sugar is as dangerous as tobacco and, in terms of world health, far more important." Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
Hi All,
I realize this is an old file, but i was looking through them all last night whilst on a low, It made me get up n look @ my yogurt. With so many brands now on the market it gets confusing. I think i have worked out why im not loosing as well as i should, I have changed to YOPLAIT YOPLUS 98%ff low gi but it has 8.3sugar.OH MY GOODNESS! I was cheating myself without even knowing it.. I used to have Yalna at the start but it was very hard to get used to so i changed not thinking it was hurting me till i read the older files. Im also a bit of a bargain hunter while shopping, with 4 kids i get whats usually on sale. Not with MY food anymore. Im not very adventurous when it comes to food so i tend to stick to the same things, better the devil you know I have a half mango my yogurt n ice in my blender, I can drink it while gettng my kids off to school n me ready 4 work. Im now handing the yoplait over to the kids (with blended fruit )so they eat it, n heading down the shops to getJalna with the green lid. It will be interesting to see how my loss ends up. Thanks for listening, Shaz |

Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
Yeah, it's annoying, isn't it.
We try SO HARD and yet, alas, we get thwarted surreptitiously. It's just not FAIR. There are two yoghurts I use. The JALNA with the green lid, and GIPPSLAND DAIRY Natural Organic Yoghurt, which has 2.35% 'sugars', but no ADDED sugar. (The sugar in there comes from the yoghurt itself, which is fine). It has 1.85% fat, which is under the 2% limit. The Jalna WAS my fave while I was on the programme, but only because I hadn't found the GD one yet. It's really yum, and, even better... CHEAPER than the Jalna!! It's available at Coles and Woolies (Safeway). It's a 'set in tub' variety, like a greek yoghurt type, and I put a few drops of 'sugarless' into it, which is an allowed sweetener. (Don't forget you get 5 serves of sweetener a day, and 4 drops is one serve, so use judiciously and remember to leave enough for your coffee!). So... To sum up... TRY THE GIPPSLAND DAIRIES ONE, it's sooooooo yum... If you cant' get that, use the Jalna.

Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
Hi All,
Just reading about the dramas with yoghurt & sugar and couldn't believe my eyes. I have for the last few weeks been making my own. Must admit not got the mix right yet but then I know what I put in and it all started with a couple of spoonfuls of bought yoghurt from my last purchase and now a litre of milk whichever I choose to buy. Got some instructions from a few recipes on the internet and have experimented. I don't mind what I have already made and will keep making it as its heaps cheaper and no sugar. Melissa

Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
My Grandma, and mum, used to make their own yoghurt. I remember there was ALWAYS a jar of fresh yoghurt in the fridge and WOE BETIDE anyone who used the last spoonful (otherwise you couldn't make more!).
What milk do you use Melissa? How do you ensure the <2% fat?

Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
After reading this post I trotted off to the shop as I needed more natural yoghurt for my and my partner's breakfast (he has a melon shake each morning as still cant stand straight natural yoghurt). While I was there I noticed a diabetics yoghurt and thought I would compare that to my usual Margaret River Natural Yoghurt and was horrified to find that it has 16g of sugar per 100g... and this is designed espeically for diabetics well you can be rest assured that I put that back in a flash and walked out with my Margaret River Brand at a quarter of the sugar content!
As for the obesity issue I have noticed that many of my friends from school and even girls I went to school with have gained the pounds - even the waif thin girls. Its almost as if the art of cooking a good hearty meal isnt being passed down through the generations anymore - we are all getting busier and sometimes, ok more often than not, it is easier to simply grab a take away meal like HJs, McDonalds or pizza on the way home rather than cook. Being on this plan has changed our (mine and my partners) lifestyle for the better and made me realised just how many refined foods I was putting into my body without a second thought. I feel more alert and healither than I have in a long time - its easier to concentrate and I dont experience the afternoon slump that I used to.

Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
Hi Everyone,
I know in this thread we have mostly been talking about yogurt but I found something else that has hidden "sugar' in it. Tofu - yes tofu! Some brands have an ingredient called "glucono delta lactone" in it. I didnt take too much notice of it till my weight loss almost stopped. When I researched the ingredient, I found out that glucono delta lactone is an accidulant which is made by fermenting glucose (from rice). What I have also found out is that our bodies metabolise it to sugar. Our bodies metabolise 1 gram of Glucono Delta Lactone into 1 gram of sugar glucose. Thats probably why my weight loss almost stopped. As soon as I changed to a different tofu without this ingredient, my weight loss picked up again. Hope this helps, Nat |

Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
I have discovered that all Milk has around the 5percent mark of natural sugar - Lactose - which even when lactose free still exists. The only way of reducing this is to not eat it at all as all milk products will contain around this amount. The yoghurt with the least amount of sugar I found today was a 'Margaret River' one. I guess that although the sugar content is there there is the possibility of it being partially broken down prior to absorbion by the fermentation process.
One other interesting fact with another yoghurt product I found was that some of them contain 'Soy compound' which would not be allowed either. I will research more and find out if I can. Melissa

I also found that the asparagus my husband had bought had sugar in it. Needless to say I did not eat it, thankfully I am a serial label reader.

Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
Yeah, Connie, you'll find the asparagus in the bottle has sugar added
Just a note for anyone new coming into the programme, you CAN request a SOY YOGHURT option, but it's only available if you request it right at the start (you can't substitute it into the programme as you go along, as it alters the other amounts of protein during the day). This is new, so, don't have a conniption if you weren't offered it when you got your programme, but anyone new who is lactose intolerant should be offered this option.

Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
Quite a few of any of the fat-free or fat-reduced products have a lot of sugar, and sometimes more calories than the full fat version. So I always read labels.
But now I've found the best yogurt ever: I make it myself, and it's cheaper, too. It's called EasiYo, basically a plastic thermos flask, where you mix a sachet of EasiYo yogurt and water, then let it sit for 6 to 9 hours, and bang, 1 litre of nice yogurt. I have tried the boysenberry so far (and funnily enough, that had less sugar than some of the fat-reduced plain ones. Now I've got the slim one in the make, with only 45 calories and zero sugar. The first one (I'm off re-feed) was the creamiest, smoothest yogurt I've ever had. They just tested about 10 different yogurts here in Perth for the acidophilus culture, and most yogurts had a negligible amount of them, and that's the healthiest part of the yogurt! Because EasiYo is made fresh, it contains much more. I'll let you know how all the other sachets taste. And the best thing: You can actually use the flask to make yogurt without the sachets by using UHT milk, some milk powder if you want it a bit more solid, and 2 spoons of natural yogurt as a starter. If you google it, you'll find the website, and also reviews, and I ordered it one day and got it the next and it's cheap! Good luck Katrin |

Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
And just another thought, having now read the whole thread:
The fact that there is sugar in the yogurt doesn't matter according to the clinic. The specifically recommended the Mundella to me, either the fat-free or the fat-reduced, and they are standing in the clinic (empty containers) as the example like the salada crackers, and still they recommend it, even despite the sugar. Off course, you can look for those of the natural ones that has the least, but again, Mundella as one WITH sugar, it's absolutely fine with Cohens. Still all much less harmful than cereals or toast with s**t for breakfast! Katrin |

Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
Another thought, nothing to do with sugar.
Check out the "ingredients" in bread crumbs OMG I don't think there is any "bread" in them at all, they have a list of about 40+ "ingredients" and numbers!! Shell

Re: Beware the hidden SUGAR!
Katrin, I have been having the easiyo slimmers yoghurt since April now and I really enjoy it. I make the flavoured ones for the rest of the family. So much cheaper too. Will have to give the other recipe a go when I'm feeling brave.
