Hi Tish,

Read ALL of Asy's posts throughout this thread - and note a few things too:-

1. Originally, Clive of India was a "Yes" - but was LATER discovered to contain fenugreek.

2. Asy says that fenugreek (like inulin) does NOT affect everyone - but it DOES affect some. She leaves it as "your call".

3. I got the distinct impression that different clinics have different levels of experience/knowledge.

4. Watch out for those "other things" that were the initial reason for avoiding some curries - starch, etc.

5. Making your own is far safer - 'cos YOU KNOW what goes into them.

here is an idea for curry

Curry Powder
  • Once you've toasted any spices you choose, you can begin composing your curry powder. Start by including the most common ingredients.
  1. Start with a tablespoon each of coriander, cumin, and turmeric
  2. Add a couple teaspoons each of dry mustard or mustard seeds and ground pepper. Many recipes call for red chili pepper flakes, while others use ground white or black pepper.
  3. If you know what optional spices you want to include in your powder, add them now. Some typical additions include:
    1. 1/2 teaspoon cardamom
    2. 2 teaspoons ginger
    3. 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  4. Variations on curry powder less commonly call for:
    1. 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds
    2. 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    3. 1 teaspoon mace

Ok folks...

There is now a curry recipe in the recipe forum which is from the Brisbane clinic:

http://newyouforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9797

It is COHENS SAFE.

The long and the short of this issue is that pretty much any commercially produced curry powder that has been checked has at least one problem ingredient. Some clinics know about the problem ingredients, others perhaps haven't done as much research so some members may have been told a particular curry is ok but others have been told it is not which is of course confusing.

I suggest doing the following:

If you haven't eaten curry powder yet, don't start using a bought one.

If you've been using a bought one and are losing fine, you might decide to keep using it if you don't think it is slowing your weight loss.

If you are using a bought one and think your weight loss is too slow, stop using it and if you want to use curry, use the recipe I have posted above.

I don't know if a lot more discussion is really needed on this thread and posting details of powders some clinics have approved can be confusing for other members. So, if you are buying a curry powder and you just can't live without it and want to double check if it is ok, rather than posting anything more about your curry to see if it is ok etc, please do the following:

Have the curry in front of you
Send a PM to me or one of the other moderators titled "please check my curry"
Include a list of absolutely every ingredient in the curry

We will then get it checked as soon as we are able to and it will avoid confusion in the forum.

Thanks
jlou

OMG Fennel is NOT allowed too? My program doesn't say it at all! No wonder my weight loss slowed down since last week because I thought I finally found a curry powder that doesn't have Fenugreek! Yikes!!

Any curry you use must NOT contain any of these items.

Keens Curry DOES contain these and is therefore NOT allowed.
Even the “Clive of India” curry which was previously thought OK is NOT ALLOWED as it contains Fenugreek, which is a BIG problem under the programme...

Of course, you may make your own, provided you adhere to the rules!

Also, just as a warning, we don’t know why, but, even the TINIEST amount of the incorrect curry seems to have fierce detrimental affect, and we’ve had reports of people “only” having a quarter of a teaspoon of the wrong curry and it stopping their weight loss for a week! The adverse effect seems utterly disproportional to the error, but, it’s been a real problem for quite a number of people.

If in doubt, leave it out!!!
OMG i have been using keens curry powder since day one and I didnt know this CRAP I am going to get a different brand thank you so much I was wondering why my weight loss was getting slow (from 6-8kgs a month to 4kgs) I hope this is the reason

I am unable to access the link jlou has put in here for the curry powder from the Brisbane office. Is anybody else having the same problem? If anybody can access it, could you PLEASE type it out and post it here instead of a link - thanks!!

Hi Vic,
I'm having the same problem - I did try this one, which is quite nice - hope it's ok to use! McPsych posted it - I didn't use the stuff in 4, and didn't have any cardamon.

I'd be happy to see the one from the Brisbane office though!

I use Keen's Curry Powder everyday and I still managed to lose 20kg in my first 2 months. I did read the label and it does say that it contains rice flour or something like that so Im going to email my Cohen's coordinator and ask her about it. When I got my 1st month blood test results I was told that I am on the right track and that there were no deviations, Im assuming if that curry powder wasn't allowed it would have shown up in my bloodtest?

Im not sure if this helps but I thought people would like to know

Hi Bloss,

Quote:

If you read each of the posts in the thread, Bloss, you will find a few things :-

1. That some curry powders do some really bad things, and the results of using them were WAY out of proportion to how much was used. Not sure we know why yet, but just be careful. Real "canary in the coal mine" stuff.

2. Other curry powders (previously thought OK) have been found to impact SOME people - is that you? I dunno. Are you "allergic" to Fenugreek? Some are, some aren't - which school are you in?

3. That there was a recommendation to "make your own" if you choose to. If you don't choose to, that's your call... You might choose to "have a go" anyway, or to stay away from curry.

4. Wine ??? We weren't discussing that in here - is it on your Plan?

Well bloss lucky you!

I on the other hand cannot even mix protein on maintenance without consequences ....as a sufferer of PCOS and a slave to my hormones I found that eating a single bread roll can cause me to gain 1kg over night.... so I don't .... and when I was on plan I stayed Deviation free ..... sure you may have still lost weight .... but how much MORE would you have lost if you stayed on plan .... how much less time on plan would that add up to over time??? .... as for living ....

I now live at 64kg ... as opposed to heading for early death at 115kg ...... seems to me that giving up mixing protein and not having wine or over indulging every day is a small price to pay

Being in the position I had been in staring early mortality down the barrel of my scales ... I consider "living" to be really important ..... but I think my definition of living may differ from yours .... I don't need wine, or food as a celebration, or conforming to other peoples ideas of what i "should" eat to make my life complete .... I discovered along the way that my life is complete because I am thin and healthy and no longer facing diseases which contributed to my fathers early demise ..... but then again to each their own

Connie

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the brisvegas office?

Can anyone provide details for those of us who may wish to purchase the Cohen's friendly curry?

PS. I just realised there's a "Tish" on this forum. I've been called Tish (my nickname) since I was 6 years old. Every time I saw someone referring to Tish I was getting confused so hello to Tish.

Hi beccy

I use Clive of India - for the amount I use, and the pinch of fenugreek which may be in my shake or fraction of a teaspoon in maybe one or two meals each week, I doubt that it would have much if any effect on weight loss

I think it depends on what and why you use curry powder

I use it primarily for the aromatics, but if I want something 'hot' then I tend to use garam marsala with a shake of chilli flakes

I also have to use more curry powder if I use it earlier in the cooking, so I tend to use as little as possible and then at the last minute, so I can really smell the curry smell even if the taste is not all that strong.

Otherwise, just read Clive of India's label, mixing together a blend which you like wouldn't take much to do. Mike recently made up a jar of tajine spices and it is amazing how fresh it tastes. A lot of our spices were bought when the children were little and our youngest child is now 24 (a couple of shakes of nutmeg each year takes 20 years to use up the supply!) - so it was time for us to go off and buy fresh packets of about 20 different varieties of spice

However, I noticed when I was doing Cohen's #2 that weight loss was slower than C#1, and during C#2 I had a real appetite for spicy food and used some form of spice in everything except yoghurt and cheese pizza!

Even so, that was quarter teaspoon of spice x up to 14 meals each week, and as this program is so finely tuned, if you were using Clive of India you would need to be alert to the possibility that you may be one of the people who react to the fenugreek

Hope this helps - otherwise, you may be relying on only the chilli flakes to give your dinners a bit of a kick!

Cheers
Kristine
