Veterinary Experience Anyone ???

I've noticed that if you need to know something around here....you guys have usually got the goods......so here's my sitch.
I have a six month old Golden Retreiver female dog. We strongly suspect that she has ADD. She is a highly eccentric girl (has a penchant for Vodka and fag ends / tries to hump the cat etc ) Rather than have her produce a litter of equally behaviourally challenged puppies , we elected to have her spayed /desexed out of consideration to the rest of the community !
Subsequently , yesterday she emerged from the local vet's with elephantine quantities of analgesia and calmatives on board. This , I was assured ,would last up to 24hrs.....it lasted 2.....
I am under strict instruction to keep her 'calm' for 2-7 days.
As I type she is attempting to scale a ten foot fence.
She has spent the morning chasing anything that moves.Or doesn't.
HOW do I do this ?????
Is it pertinent to administer more drugs ???
Hopefully to both of us ???

I can't imagine that a dog that looks so "angelic" could be a demon dog!
Can you lock it or yourself in a cupboard??

If not, if I were you I would take the dog's drugs.
The dog obviously is imune to them!!!

Are you sure she isn't still in the "puppy stage"? I would go to another vet for another opnion just in case. Perhaps the hypo-activity is part of her breed too?

I contacted my trustee vet today.Clearly the girl is in no pain ....so my mission...should I choose to accept it ......is to follow her around for seven long days and ensure that she doesn't bust up her suture line....sure why not ???? I've got nothing else to do !!!

hi, go and get a empty bucket ( like a drum ie something like a masterfoods 30kg mayo drum) lid not necessary and take it home draw a circle on the outside bottom of the drum small enough to just get the dogs head threw, and cut out the circle with either a jigsaw or drill a series of holes side by side so it ends up joining and the piece falls out.
then use a file to smooth out all the burred edges and then drill some other holes on the outside of the cut circle. get the dogs collar do it up and with some rope of heavy duty twine or cable ties will do and fasten the coller to the drum and undo the collar and put around the dogs neck after you have put the dogs head threw the hole in the drum so the inside of the bucket has the dogs head in it.
do the collar up tight enough so the dog cant get the collar or drum off its head and that will stop it from doing anything silly and keep the dog occupied by trying to get it off. also get maybe some old dog toys and put some dog food in it that way the dog will have something to do during the day by trying to get the food out of the toys. this should solve your probs.
i am very surprised that the vet did not tell you to do this as the collar / drum is usually the only option to stop animals from attacking their stitches. apart from the dog bumping into things she will be fine, you may have to take the drum off when the dog eats and then put back on afterwards. hope that this helps.

JESUS CHRIST !!!...OK thanks Jacin....I am quite good with power tools ...so will make a project tonight.... I've seen those collars on DR Harry , so should be right......man ! I had NO IDEA this would be such an ordeal....OH well ...that's life !!!
I think Shell's idea about getting off our tits on medication was probably the most productive !!!

Once you've made the drum, teach the dog to stand on it's back legs (treats are good incentive) then fill the bucket with water!!!!!!

You can usually buy those bucket collars from the VET...I got one when my dog was desexed...worked a treat I am surprised the vet didnt suggest it

Those collars are called "Elizabethan Collars" for obvious reasons, you should be able to get one from your vet for around $10.

Some dogs don't chew their stitches. But I think, in your case, the main problem will be her busting them from sheer stupidity.

Do you have a relatively un-cluttered laundry or shed? Could you lock her in the laundry with a LARGE STACK of chew toys and bones for a few days?

I mean, she's a GR and as such absolutely insane. No question there, but it's OK, they usually come good about 5yo, if you're lucky. What in DAYLIGHTS possessed you to get one?!?!?! Oh yeah, they're cute..

If you REALLY can't cope, or she's getting really stupid, ring the vet and DEMAND more sedatives. It won't hurt her. Promise.

FIVE YEARS OLD ??!!!

The trully insane part is.....this is my THIRD retriever (and a lab)....but she is FAR and away the most demonicly possessed......It has to be said though , as such she is a great match for THIS family
Asy , I tried the shed bit .....she lasted 10 mins and screamed her head off....it's now 72 hr post op and MY GOD...if she hasn't busted that suture line by NOW .....she's NOT GOING TO !!!!!!!!
In actual fact they've done a great job , and the sutures/union is a thing of beauty.
Hay Zambuck......no need to test this one for demonism...........cross and garlic required.

Have you had thought about getting a Dog Whisperer to come and see you all. Not to lay blame or anything, but it could be some family behaviours that are causing her to act like this. She needs to know that she is the dog in the family, and at the bottom of the rung.

i've just started training my dogs to stop barking at everything that walks by the house, and in less than 2 days it's already sinking in to them.

The worst thing you can do is yell at your dog when she's barking, cos she just thinks you're joining in with her, which leads her to think there really is something to be barking at. I've been advised to exaggeratedly look at what they are barking about, tell them "good job" for barking (cos they are just doing their job after all) and then walk away. if they continue to bark lock them in the bathroom** until they calm down.

**If you lock your dog up when you are away during the day make sure you don't lock them up for barking in the same place
