Australia Is The Heavyweight Champion Of The World According to a comprehensive obesity study Australia is now the most overweight nation in the world. The study reports that 26% of Australians are obese, edging out the USA, at 25%, from top spot. Australians aged 45-64 are the fattest, 7 out of 10 men and 6 out of 10 women having a BMI of 25 or higher. Prof Simon Stewart, Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, said "That makes us the heavyweight champions, a title we don't really want. The report calls for subsidising gym memberships and prioritising surgery wait lists . Prof. Stewart said "These are some of the...things we need to deal with because the healthcare system is going to be overwhelmed by weight-related hospitalisations" What's missing here? What's the best and also the least expensive way of losing weight? Of course, everyone reading this knows the answer. People become overweight when their food intake exceeds their energy output. For most, the gym really isn't going to solve the problem (they won't consume enough energy to lose all the weight), although it will help with maintenance when the weight is gone. As for surgery, I don't think it's solving any problems. Far better to spend the money in a concentrated campaign to encourage the population to eat more fresh foods, cut back on carbs, and go out walking each day. AJ

Started 11/1/08. Lowest weight reached 63.8 kgs on 10/11/08 and 40 kgs down. Thank you Dr Cohen.
Back again to do it all over again, starting from exactly the same weight as last time. My health is not good and my doctor is predicting all sorts of nasty things if I don't lose weight. Couldn't agree with you more AJ.
The gym I go to is full of big women. A lot are probably between 30 and 50 years old and I know they will not be able to lose the weight they want at the gym even doing lots of cardio. It is such hard work to lose weight that way as a lot of us on Cohens already know. I really feel like going up to some of them and telling them not to waste their money on gym membership and spend it on Cohens. Then when they have lost the weight they can enjoy exercise. Tuti |

Without treating the root cause of why there metabolism is generating fat they are just wasting their time.

I have spent many hours in the gym and have always been fit, regardless of my size, but I can tell you it doesnt shift much weight unless combined with diet. There has actually been research that shows that most people actually overestimate how much energy they burn at the gym and tend to think they can eat more than they ought as a result. Also after going to the gym they say people are often less active at home as they think they have "done their exercies"

Hi
I think the problem is a lot about what is considered "normal" in today's society- have you viewed an old episode of a TV program (eg a soapie) and seen how much thinner the people there are than they are the the current version? I am also constantly amazed that no matter what time of day I go into a shopping center there are people eating and I dont mean little snacks - huge meals! I dont want to sound self righteous (heck I am a newbie here!) but the problem in my opinion is what is being considered "normal" in society and what we are conditioned to think by the media/advertising etc etc When I first heard about this program and did the weight range thingy on the net - I thought that is WAY too light - its in Kgs but when I converted that back to stones (yes I'm, 50!!) suddenly it sounded reasonable - perception again I know!! Well, I am in South Africa, and I promise you since I have lost my weight, I am so aware of people being overweight it has become quite scary.
I would estimate that up to 95% of people around here are definitely overweight, maybe now obese, but definitely too heavy. You know those tell tale folds on the back? Sure it is our life style. Everything is faster and more rushed. More families have two working parents, which tends to stimulate making quicker meals, or more take out meals. Just sad like you say that you cannot go up to people and preach COHEN. I am sure you will get a slap or two if you ha to daer do that. |
