Butter & Margarine - which one do you prefer?????
This is interesting . . . Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings. DO YOU KNOW.. the difference between margarine and butter? Read on to the end...gets very interesting! Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams. Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study. Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods. Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added! Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods. Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years . And now, for Margarine.. Very high in trans fatty acids . Triple risk of coronary heart disease . Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol) Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold. Lowers quality of breast milk. Decreases immune response. Decreases insulin response. And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING! Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC.. This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance). You can try this yourself: Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things: * no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something) * it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it.. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic . Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast? Andy

Oh ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!! That's so gross!!!
We were brought up on marg but a few years back I decided for myself that I was going to give my children butter instead (or sometimes nothing).. I cant remember why.. something to do with the chemical side of things I think.. but butter in my opinion tastes HEAPS better.. Awesome post Andy!!! |

I've always preferred and normally used butter. I've known most of the negatives about margarine for quite some time. Butter is a fresh, natural product. Also, when I was young, a dairy marketing organisation put out a bumper sticker that said Butter eaters make better lovers. What better reason for eating butter rather than marg.

Must admit, my mum always bought marg when I was growing up because it "isn't as fattenning as butter" and "it's not going to give you heart disease" etc...
As soon as I left home I started buying butter, never ever buy marg, it's yuck. I do like the softened butter, though... Even if I very rarely use it. One tub lasts 3-6 months around here... asy PS: Thanks for that illuminating fact, AJ, I might have to START using it!!! I wonder if 'things' could GET any better!

I have read those facts about marg and butter before, they are very interesting. My theory is to go with whats natural, so I prefer butter, plus it tastes better. Like so many things the problem really only occurs when things are used to excess. Like ASY I take months to go through it so sometimes I have to throw it away, but it would be the same if I used marg.

Very interesting Andy, thanks for that. I have a container of *brand name* Canola spread in the fridge. I have had it there for at least 2.5 years (the length of time I've lived on the FNC) and I brought it up with me from Sydney - the "best before" date is January 2005. I haven't eaten butter or marge since I was about 8 (I'm now 35) because I was a bit precious as a kid and didn't like the oily feeling on my fingers (I know - we used a knife but it was balanced on the rim of the tub - hence the oilyness on the handle and my intense dislike for dirty hands that took years to get over.). My boyfriend was horrified that I had very little in the fridge (he he - he was even more horrified when I handed him a fishing rod and told him "the fish are jumping - go and catch our dinner" (I lived on a river when in Sydney and I used to fish every couple of nights off the jetty for dinner). He went into town and bought pasta, spuds, pumpkins - all the things I now know aren't really great - and the Canola spread (I'm assuming it's marge - butter's from animals, right?) and cooked up a storm - way too much for me to eat even back then.
So, long boring story about my life and loves cut short - I just checked it and it's still yellow, little bit of funny white liquid but it's still quite firm. Personally, I wouldn't eat it, even though it looks okay. I think I'll hang onto it for a while yet and see what happens to it... My own little plastic experiment! Cheers Helen |

Don't you wish you had read that article on Snopes BEFORE you posted your first "email" message? (been using snopes for years! - Especially to poo-poo the constant barrage of bogus quack email crap floating around). Had you done so, it wouldn't look quite so funny to me. It specifically disses your opening paragraph in your first post. At least you could have edited the email rather than cut and propagate the same stuff. Gave me a good laugh though. Reminded me of the featherless KFC chickens ones that went around for a while. Bally, Here is the truth, also from Snopes, regarding Canola Oil: http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/canola.asp I've been using canola oil for cooking along with EVOO and canola spreads instead of butter or margarine for a number of years now. (but I eat very little of the spread as I never ate much in the way of sandwiches, usually only using it on my baked taters.

Got you thinking though !!!!!!
I knew about it - but just getting the mind of others working - any reaction is a positive ....... think about it ....at least it gave you a laugh but made others think ....I didn't entirely believe it although its interesting to note that it is partially true. I think that some of the persons doing Cohen's really need to re adjust their thinking and start thinking out side the square ....Edward De Bono stuff ......... and you would know who he is !!!!!
http://www.edwdebono.com/ Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. Ralph Waldo Emerson American Poet I have used that site as well for years ..... and its not bad ... I often send it as a reply to some of the the emails I get .... especially the ones about missing children etc and the "Don't open such and such email because ......!!!" All good mate ...... hope all is well in your part of the world. Andy

Hey SMS - I remember giving our canaries rape seed when I was little - but we weren't able to let them have too much. I remember being told it's good for them - didn't know it was canola! Still not going to eat the stuff in the fridge, though! He he.

Re: Butter & Margarine - which one do you prefer?????
Isn't olive oil spread similar to "Margarine"? It is vegetable oil right?
I did saw some olive oil spread in the supermarket but I think I will definitely indulge in butter when I reach maintenance!

Re: Butter & Margarine - which one do you prefer?????
Fornight,
I think its really a case of reading the fine print when it comes to margarine/olive oil spreads to see whats in them - i've been amazed at just how much some of them differ. I have stuck with butter as the rest taste really synthetic to me - like licking plastic! |

Re: Butter & Margarine - which one do you prefer?????
On plastic sheet covers I don't find much difference in using butter or margarine or olive oil. Although coconut oil has the best fragrance for that kind of thing!
