Post Help with tiredness

I have struggled with extreme tiredness throughout this whole program.
Initially I put it down to being overweight and being busy studying, as I was tired before I even started the program, so I thought it was just a continuation of how I was living my life.

As I've dropped the weight and my lifestyle has changed the tiredness continues and I've come to suspect it has a lot to do with the diet. I tried all kinds of things, having an extra vitamin at lunch time, extra magnesium, zinc, iron, all to no avail.

What I recently discovered was that instead of having just one extra multi vitamin at lunch time to take 2 extra a lunch time. That seemed to really make a difference. I read on someone's post that a consultant advised a client they can have upto 5 extra multi vitamins a day, so it would seem that it is acceptable to take extra, and it really does combat that draining tiredness.

I also really try and listen to my body and have a rest as often as I can, but that is a bit tough when you have to work all day! I've tried this 2 extra multivitamins for about 4 days in a row, and it seems to be working every time!

So hope this helps some of you who are struggling with tiredness as well.

Vee

Hi Vee
Here I go again - and I know this will be a contoversial reply but I would get further advice before contemplating increasing your vitimin intake. For example I take a Blackmores Womans Multi-Vitimin which contains 'Selenium' - howerver there is a caution not to exceed the recomended daily intake because it can be 'toxic'. Like wise there are many articles that talk about the overuse of vitimins - for example some are water soluble vitamins - such as the B group vitamins and vitamin C - these cannot be stored by the body to any great extent, so if you take in more than your body needs, they are simply excreted. However there are fat soluble vitamins (A and D ) which can accumulate in the body, but pose no danger to your health if consumed within the safe upper limits indicated for them.
I guess what I am tryingto say is that there is alot of information and research on this subject and definantly 'professionals' who would be able to guide you. I am a firm believer in natural and alternate therapies - but like with any 'medicine' it needs to be administered cortrectly

thanks for your opinions vee and kitkat. very interesting for me to hear.

i'm only on day 5 but am feeling really tired as well. i too, have attributed it to a lack of sleep, study, being a bit sick for the first few days and now getting my period back (oh joy) after my last pregnancy, but i'm getting a bit worried that the tiredness will continue. i'm due to go back to work in a couple of weeks, and am hoping i have the energy to cope.

not too sure about taking excess vitamins. hmm. i've switched from my breastfeeding vitamins (elevit, megafol) to a general multi (centrum) and also a stronger iron supplement, which i'm hoping will help with the tiredness.

will keep you posted.

From memory (bad) I don't think centrium is on the approved list- check with your clinic to make sure.

I was thinking some more about my post, and was wanting to add the following, which of course also applies as a response to Kay and CC.

If you are experiencing such tiredness, and I don't just mean for a week or so, I'm talking about months here, it is always best to consult with your clinic and also get your blood work tested via your doctor to make sure there is nothing else going on.

Then, if, as in my case, nothing else seems to be the problem, then look at possibly increasing your intake of multi vitamins. I have been using the Blackmores general multi vitamin that is slow released, and it has been very effective for ME!
You do have to be aware, that this multi vit has more of the B6 in it than is recommended and if you are sensitive to it, then do not do this, as it is known B6 can stimulate hunger. The effectiveness of this method for me could also be totally dependent on my particular body chemistry or the use of that brand of vitamins.

Kath, I've found in general, multivitamins contain substantially less than the RDA amounts recommended. Also that the body generally excretes what it doesn't use (causing pee to go very yellow). Based on that knowledge, I felt it was a safe option for ME!

The reason I posted this, was on prompting from others to share what worked FOR ME!! That of course does not mean to say it will work for everyone!
As I said, when in doubt, check with your clinic!! They should always be your first port of call!

I've only shared here what has worked for ME. It was also after I was also advised by my consultant to try taking extra multi vitamins to see if they helped.

So thanks Kath and CC for pointing out to others what and why to be careful of in using this method to try and combat your tiredness.

Cohenites, check with your clinic, and use your own common sense!

Vee

I'm having a bad case of NO energy, i've been on the program for 6months, and in what seems to be daily, i experience light headedness alot and just don't have the energy to do things.

I did go to the doctor yesterday to get blood tests done so will wait and see if anything comes up.

Light headedness might be that you are drinking too much water, Perthwoman. Each time I had that I cut my water back half a litre and it went away.

Back again to do it all over again, starting from exactly the same weight as last time.
My health is not good and my doctor is predicting all sorts of nasty things if I don't lose weight.

Back again for the support. Still think the diet and the forum are the best ever, but too old to do it again. Now losing again slowly on maintenance diet. Ticker shows next intermediate goal only (5 kilos).

Perthwoman, yes, it's okay. Consultants have been saying we need to drink 1 litre for each 25 kgs of body weight. I started out at 104 kgs, drinking 4 litres a day. As my weight dropped, I found I was having dizzy spells. My consultant suggested I decrease my water by 1/2 litre, and I did this several times as my weight went down, and each time the dizzyness stopped. You have lost quite a lot since you started, so it's worth trying decreasing the water.

However, have a look also at this post by asy: . I think there is another thread where someone had asked Dr Cohen to clarify, but I couldn't find it. However, my recollection is that it said the same as in this post.

Default Hi Vee

"Based on that knowledge, I felt it was a safe option for ME!"

Hi Vee - couldn't agree more and this is how I usually make my decisions - I guess I could have worded my post better. I believe that we all have different make-ups and health histories and this can make a difference in how treatments (pharmacutecal/natural) work for an individual - I was aiming for a 'play it safe' response.

I also think that products can vary in ingrediants and dosage and this needs to be a factor in any decision. My example was based on the multi I take. If I were to increase this multi to 5 as recmmended by someones clinic, it would give me 130 ** per day of Selenium when it states on the bottle not to exceed 100** per day as it is toxicin high doses - add to this that Selenium is found naturally in food - give or take a few ** and have I potentially taken a high dose?? Do this every day for a couple of months and what effect will it have? I don't know but I guess thats where I would be seeking advice from a naturpath or Doctor.

You have a great journey and your experience has and will continue to help others I'm sure

Kath

After chatting with Vee on our Sunday meeting and her mentioning the extra multi - vitamins I thought I would give it a go.
I have been feeling really tired as well especially the last few months. I have been taking just one extra vitamin with lunch and it has worked a treat. THANKS VEE
