My NYF Diary
Default Weight loss slowing over the months ??

Hi all,

I've noticed many references to "weight loss slowing as time goes on" just recently. I think I might have discovered something that some people read, and perhaps take the wrong way....

First off, in most cases I can recall, weight loss over the months (apart from Month 1) are usually pretty much the same. Note, this is just my opinion, based on observation of many people over time, and may not be true for everybody.

But, I got a clue recently that may have lead to the belief that "losses slow down" as you go - and that is the blessed "average monthly loss".

The average loss includes that first month (where most lose almost TWICE what their on-going loss will be). And, I believe it is this first month included in the "average" that seems to show a slowing down over time. Here's an example:-

Losses over time (example)

Mth1......Mth2......Mth3......Mth4......Mth5...... .Mth6
9.2Kg.....4.8Kg.....5.0Kg.....4.7Kg......5.1Kg.... ..4.9Kg

Now, if you take those figures, it is easy to see that months 2 - 6 averaged 4.9Kg.

BUT, if including Month 1 in the average figures, it "appears" that weight loss decreases over time:-

Average loss over 2 months = 7Kgs
Average loss over 3 months = 6.33Kgs
Average loss over 4 months = 5.93Kgs
Average loss over 5 months = 5.76Kgs
Average loss over 6 months = 5.62Kgs

Notice, the "average" appears to drop consistently, whereas the ACTUAL weightloss (apart from month 1) is remarkably steady.

Of course, any deviations, or uncalled for interruptions, etc. WILL affect the usual loss. So, the whole "loss" argument is very much an individual thing. For those who chart their losses, the truth (or otherwise) of my post above will be easy to see.

Feel free to add YOUR comment re above. Is/was YOUR weightloss consistent (more-or-less) over time? Or, did it slow down as you neared the end?

Please DON'T use the "average" if it involves month 1 though....

Koh

And me? I'm a tall skinny-ish bloke (BMI ~25.5) and have been this way forever, so I haven't faced (weight-wise) what you all have !!

Unfortunately I didn't keep an accurate chart of my weight losses, so I don't know exactly what my monthly averages were. However, while it fluctuated from week to week, the losses remained fairly steady throughout the program. So while some weeks only saw a 400 gram loss, other weeks saw 1.3 kilos gone, so the average loss for the duration of the diet was 1.03 kilos a week. Granted, that's less than a lot of people, but considering that I've never succeeded in losing more than 5 kilos with anything, I'm pretty darn stoked about that!

Hi Koh
Thought I'd respond statistically

Month 1 loss 8.8 kg
Month 2 loss 7.0 kg
Month 3 loss 5.1 kg
Month 4 loss 5.5 kg
Month 5 loss 5.2 kg
Month 6 loss 5.1 kg

I was guilty of averaging my loss by including Month 1 and as you point out that really is a unique month due to water etc. Statistically I'm averaging 4.58 kg loss per month and although my results are fairly consistent there has been a slight drop each month - I have been deviation free except for Month 6 when I had a few moments over the Christmas period. I'm happy with my losses and if I can maintain 5kg plus per month I think that is more than enough for my body to cope with considering that there are many other things happening physiology speaking with weight loss. By the way I am on track to reach 5 kg plus for month 7 also.
Nice thread Koh
