Default Fish?

I am keen to have some fish every now and then, but am finding it hard to source snapper in Christchurch. I'm not keen on sole/flounder, and am getting a bit over the tuna (both tinned and steaks). Does anyone know if we are allowed any other white fish apart from those mentioned above?

Hi R ;}

Me either, I couldn't find Snapper in CHCH the whole time I did my Program & I got tired of going into different fish shops trying.

A while back I searched forum and found some old threads on Aust fish names different from ours, and there were some options for Program OK fish under different names. Then I made some decisions around that info. I recall it talked about the colour of the fish flesh being white and low oil.

Also have you phoned to check with Durham St Clinic because I saw a few fish names on a list on my consultants desk PC on Monday this week.

Hi C!

I love snapper, but yes it seems like we don't get it here in ChCh. I asked at Theo's fish supply a few weekends ago and they said they don't get it often.

Yes, I emailed the clinic today and they said any dry white fish was okay. So, tomorrow I will go and buy some terakihi and enjoy having a different protein other then chicken, beef and prawns!

OK, that's all good.
Yes, I tried there too.

So now I feel ok saying that on Program when I needed a change and went off the Sole, I have had Tarakihi which a fisherman told me is the same family/species as Snapper.
I have also had Blue Cod.
And then Frozen Hoki (Sealord packs of "natural") because I got tired of smelly 'fresh fish'. And Sky Cooking channels say Fish should not smell!
Happy variations :}

Love blue cod! It's the only fish I would buy at the fish n chip shop! I get a little put off after going to the fish mongers too. Still I can prob get both tarikihi and blue cod from Countdown so won't have to frequent smelly fish shops too much now!

Looking forward to my dinner tomorrow night.

I just got myself some hoki, and I was sooo confused! I nearly didn't buy it. Au program says Hake, and I was furiously googling on my iPhone (with bad reception in the supermarket) to see if it was the same as Hoki and I'm pretty sure it is. I got the Hoki...

I think Hoki would be fine too. I just had some blue cod. I asked at the seafood counter if it was considered an "oily" fish. They said no. I found this chart on line.
