Default Some classics are just ..... CLASSIC !!

I happened upon this old gem on another forum - and it took me back to my youth (my Mum had produced this for a young tyke to read and learn from - parts of this have remained with me for DECADES - it is SO good to see it again in its entirety). I have always loved the sentiments expressed, and have endeavoured to live up to its wisdom.... even when failing dismally, those words can help to get one back on track...

It is timeless for sure

What a lovely poem

I have never seen it before. But what a way to live your life by. It makes me think of my dad. He has always said to me the top 2 lines (it is the creed he has lived his life on). Of course I fail miserably . Inherited a quick firey german temper.

Any more gems. I love them

Default The paradox of our time in history....

Just overheard this on radio this morning. Made a lot of sense to me.
A classic in the making perhaps?

It seems it's been rumoured to have been written by George Carlin - which he denies..... The "truthorfiction" website claim to have found the true author, so I'll attribute HIS name to this very thoughtful piece.....

Enjoy (if that's the right word) It's a sobering piece, yet has hope...

In a response to an inquiry by TruthOrFiction.com, Dr. Moorehead said he wrote it in 1990. It was later published in 1995 in his book WORDS APTLY SPOKEN.

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but
shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more,
but have less; we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and
smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees
but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more
problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little,
drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too
little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our
possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and
hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to
life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but
have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer
space but not inner space.

Started 11/1/08. Lowest weight reached 63.8 kgs on 10/11/08 and 40 kgs down. Thank you Dr Cohen.
Back again to do it all over again, starting from exactly the same weight as last time.
My health is not good and my doctor is predicting all sorts of nasty things if I don't lose weight.
What else do I do? I help people make money and I help people save money. Please take a look at http://www.acnlinks.clancie.com.au/
Back again for the support. Still think the diet and the forum are the best ever, but too old to do it again. Now losing again slowly on maintenance diet. Ticker shows next intermediate goal only (5 kilos).

Default Story of a Violinist

Just received this in an email, and it seems to fit in this thread.

A man at a metro station in Washington DC started to play the violin; it was a cold winter morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousands of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.


A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk.


A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother rushed him along, hurried, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars. Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston and the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story.

Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of an social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?

PS I did check Snopes (sorry, AJ - not that I disbelieved - I loved the story anyway) and I'm glad I did, as it confirmed the TRUTH of the story, and led to a further classic thought.

That came from the reasoning behind the experiment in the first place:-

"In a banal setting at an inconvenient time, would beauty transcend?"

And, I ask us all, "Why not?" ........... at least the kids were listening !! Koh
