Birth Control Pill & weight loss
Anyway, I am thinking of birth control methods and I am considering going back on the pill... I am also looking to re-start Cohens as soon as my baby is 100% weaned (which is gonna be soon-ish) I was wondering if there is anyone out there that remained on their pill whilst on their diet and if so, did it affect the way you lost weight? Or Is there anyone who started the pill whilst doing their diet? If so, did you notice a change in your weight losses? Did you get more or less cravings than before? Would you recommend someone being on the pill and doing Cohens? My husband and I have decided that I am over-the-top fertile whilst on Cohens (I have fallen pregnant TWICE whilst on Cohens!) so it is definitely best for me to cover all areas of birth control. Thanking you in advance Lisa |

Re: Birth Control Pill & weight loss
Hi, I started Cohens on the pill (Brevinor) and as my husband was away working for weeks at a time I decided to go off the pill to see if it sped up my losses (a Doctor told me once I had NO chance of losing weight whilst on the pill - what a quack!!!!). It had the opposite effect, my losses stopped completely!!! Hope this helps.

Re: Birth Control Pill & weight loss
Hi Jama...
Pregnant twice on Cohens!?!? Jeepers, he really is a fertility Doctor! hehe. Obviously this is my experience only- so it may not happen with anyone else or be true in anyway (hehe, my disclaimer)... but I am on Diane 35ED and have been throughout my journey and my cycle has been stronger than the pill since being on Cohens... What I mean is, I skip periods every so often and did so before Cohens (with sucess) as well as now, during the program... but now (much to my dismay) my period comes every 28 (or so) days regardless of whether my pill pack says it should... I have not been trusting it for contraception... I am seeing my doctor soon (week or so) to see if maybe I need a sronger pill or something, or whether the contraception factor is still working... cos I have no clue. Maybe you should ask your doc?? Oh also, I don't think being on the pill has affected my weightloss negatively. I hope that helps somewhat Missy

Re: Birth Control Pill & weight loss
Hi if you are planning on having no more children the best advice i can give is to have the Mirena fitted. It is an IUD and also has a 'hormone' release in it! It is only usually fitted for women who have had babies (due to the cervix being more dilated) and protects you for 5 years!!
THE BEST thing about it is that is reduces your periods, makes them much, much lighter and some women they dont get a period after about 6 months when the hormone release reaches its peak... it was a god send to me - as after having kids my periods were becoming very heavy and painful, the mirena has stopped the pain and the flow where i am lucky to have a 'spot' bleed for one or two days and i dont have to think a bout taking a tablet everyday i did a lot of research on it before i had it fitted (it is relatively new) and mostly women RAVED about it, highly recommended if you are happy with the size of your family...and if not you can always have it taken out later and get pregnant

Re: Birth Control Pill & weight loss
Thanks for your replies everyone.
Hexi2 - My problem with the mirena is someone I know of someone who had one inserted and it was pierced through her uterus causing extreme pain. Also, because I have sooooooooooo many side effects from the pill I like to make sure I can control the hormones if need be. I have had to try so many different pills in my life, each one had changed after having children. My husband is having a vasectomy done next year but in the mean time I just want to be double protected (we use other protection too) to ensure no more Cohens babies |

Re: Birth Control Pill & weight loss
Oh thats too bad - must be a very rare thing as i have never heard of that happening...or a very bad gyno...
the mirena does provide 2 levels of coverage - first is the hormone levels are low (similar to the mini pill) which stop you from ovulating but secondly if an egg was released and fertilised it can not implant due to the IUD

Re: Birth Control Pill & weight loss
Hexi- any side benefits like skin and hair improvement? I used to take Diane35 and my skin was beautiful but I ballooned on it and had awful mood swings. How does Mirena compare?

Re: Birth Control Pill & weight loss
I have had a Mirena for 10 years now (well, this is the end of my second one) and I would similarly rave about their awesomeness. I had it fitted at 18 due to incredibly long and heavy periods, and it has made a world of difference. I haven't had children, either.

Re: Birth Control Pill & weight loss
Yes i have heard of a few people having it done before having children but they usually recommend that its used for women post children - i guess because of the 5 year coverage but also to have it inserted is easier on women who have had children (naturally) as the cervix is more dilated...unfortunately i had c-sections for both kids and never got past 3cm dilation so when i had it fitted they gave me an injection to numb the cervix (that bit hurt more than the mirena itself) as it was like inserting into someone who hadnt had children...
either way i agree with you Harriet - the mirena rocks! no more pmt, no more pain or heavy flow, lucky if i get a period at all and when i do its only a one day or half day thing

Re: Birth Control Pill & weight loss
The first time I had it done while under a general anaesthetic as they were treating endometriosis. The second time, I had it done with no pain relief...I don't recommend that one!

Re: Birth Control Pill & weight loss
I have been using the Pill right through out, and can't say that it has negatively affected my weight loss.

Re: Birth Control Pill & weight loss
I was on the Pill when i started the diet, and for me personally it through my cycle way out of wack, It would start early and last much longer then Ive ever had it. This started the first month I started the diet, I ended up going off the pill after 4 months and my cycle returned to normal nearly the same as what it was on the pill before the diet, through out the whole thing it never effected my weight loss at all.

Re: Birth Control Pill & weight loss
My advice would be to avoid a high progesterone pill. My weight gain all started when I got Implanon (which is like depo-provera but sustained release) and 20kg crept on. I am pretty sure the mini-pill is high progesterone.
From reading others posts here (and thank you ladies for being so frank and honest!) I am considering again getting the mirena. I had an operation for endometriosis just before my wedding (hence the honeymoon baby!! God only knows how fertile I would have been without the endometriosis!!) and haven't taken any hormones since as I wanted to give my body the best chance at being 'normal'. Unfortunately in the last 6 months or so things have been not at all right with my periods and I need to do something. I was thinking I may need another operation but the comments about the mirena have given me hope there may be another option! |
