Default Coffee, coffee, coffee

I love my coffee, shall I add WITH milk. My biggest struggle with being on the diet is that I had to cut out my milk. No matter how hard I try I cannot get used to black coffee, I very much dislike the bitter after taste. Oh and let me also just add the fact that it is currently winter in SA, and I miss my hot cuppa coffee. Any advice, is there anything I can add to the coffee to substitute the milk yet enjoy the taste?

Hi WIP
You really are NOT the lone ranger on this one. However I have discovered something and I know from experience that others have also. We all the love the milkiness of our coffee - we all think we can't do without it, but it actually comes down the how good the coffee is - and if they have burnt it when making it.
I would suggest most coffees taste absolutely awful when taken black - you actually have to just try different coffee houses until you find one where they dont burn it and you enjoy the flavour black.
For example, so far, I have found 4 places that I enjoy a black coffee - consistently - that is it (all the rest taste crappola, in my opinion) - it is going to be case of
"suck it up sister" - there is no way around the milk situation - so you are going to have to deal with it.
Having said that - I was previously a mocha girl - the thought of wasting good food calories on having a milky coffee is not acceptable to me now. It may take you a while to develop the taste for black (great black - not average black) but it will happen...I dont think it stops the cravings for having a milky coffee - in fact, I would still love one - but boy would it make me sick!!!

The bitter aftertaste exists in badly made/burnt/cheap coffee.

In my opinion: Just accept what needs to be done and try to move forward with it.

Hi Workinprogress,
Here in NZ coffee is a way of life, we meet friends and family at café's for Coffee, my husband I both loved our latte, but for nine months now I have been having a "long black" and I have truly grown to love my long black, now my husband has his the same or he has a trim latte because he is finding milk is upsetting his stomach.
I will try a flat white when I get my milk allowance now I'm in refeed, but I have more or less made up my mind I will have long black for the rest of my life.
It is just one of the changes I will be making to the way I ate and drunk before Cohen's. I can never go back to the "old normal" I now have to find a "new normal" for me. Cohens has been one of the most exciting journeys in my life. I never want to put back the weight I have lost. Just a thought, I do now put 1/2 a sucaryl (sweetner) in my coffee, this does help you get used to the bitter taste. I never used to have sugar in coffee before.
Cheers Maggie

oh do i hear you!!
I love my coffee with milk and have tried it black but really cant stomach it... so i tried black tea ... all the ones we are allowed and ended up settling on peppermint tea, which I have had as a substitute for coffee whenever I have been in a situation where I would normally drink coffee... I have acquired a taste for it now and have been drinking it most days for the past few weeks.

Unfortunately there is no way around the milk in coffee thing so just grin and bear it and know that you will be able to have it again once you reach that stage in refeed

I agree with all of the above finding a "good" coffee or perhaps substituting with tea. Or my suggestion is try making a ricotta coffee cake - I haven't tried this yet because I dont have enough time to experiment but I think this would be the closest to a nice "milky" coffee hit. Im pretty sure Ive read a recipe for it on this forum in the Cohen's Recipes section - check it out.

It's taken me 8 months but now a well made long black is nirvana! I always ask for a serve of hot water on the side as well as sweetener to rescue me if I find I am served a badly made one. Another problem is that many people don't know how to maintain their espresso machines and don't clean them enough.

As a latte lover myself, I found that if I made a coffee flavoured yoghurt that it did the trick. Now however, a well made long black is definately worth having. I never ever would have thought that that was possible but persistance really pays off. As RT says, the trick is in finding a place that makes a good cuppa, then you're right. Also I have tried Nescafe Blend 43 decaf and it is very drinkable. Your tastes will change over time, just as a lot of us has too.
All the best
Jen
