Default green tea

Hi all

I don't normally drink green tea but last night had run out of my usual herbal tea so had one. Just plain green tea, red seal brand I think.

Started to feel a bit funny after with palpitations like I had had a hefty shot of caffeine and then, when i went to the bathroom to get ready for bed I noticed my pupils were HUGE! One was bigger than the other which was a bit scary but, once i convinced myself I wasn't in the process of having a brain haemorrhage, I calmed down.

Couldn't get to sleep either and ended up taking a sleeping pill.

So my question is... How much caffeine is there in green tea and are there other ingredients that would have that effect?
I know they used to put belladonna eye drops in to enlarge the pupils in 'the old days' as it was thought to be attractive but seriously I think I looked more like this smilie...

YIKES!!

Have you checked the ingredients list? Sounds like there could be something else in it as well as just green tea.

I can't imagine green tea doing that unless you have an allergy to it. Have you drunk it before?

Something doesn't sound right.

it sounds like it was a herbal supplement tea rather than straight GT
but if it is the first time you have used it it could be you

Hi,
I can't drink green tea either. For pretty much the same effects you mentioned. I can drink black tea but not on an empty stomach. I can't drink coffee, possibly because of the very high amount of caffeine. Green tea has about the same or less amount of caffeine as black tea so if you can drink black tea without the negative effect, the cause is not likely to be caffeine.

Green tea contains a lot of compound chemicals that don't exist to anywhere near the same degree in black tea. These are catechins or flavonoids and are mostly said to be good for us. Yet, like many things in the plant kingdom, they may not be good for everybody.
