Default Multi Vitamins

It was explained that Dr C recommends multi vitamins while on the program. It was also pointed out that they must have less than 5Mg of B6. The only ones I can find anywhere with less than 5Mg of B6 are, naturally, the ones Dr C sells in his clinic here.

have others heard of the B6 restriction ?

Default Multi Vitamins

I have taken note of the 5mg restriction on B6, I could find some vitamins+mineral supplements (Japanese brand) in my local supermarket that had exactly the limit of B6.

I suppose it just depends on how worried you are about such things, I understand is that some people get hungry with too much B6.

In my personal view if you have a brand you like/respect then just take those even if they may have a little more B6 than recommended.

One problem (or is it?) with the diet is that everything is presented either "OK" allowed, or "NG" a deviation, and Santa (err Dr Cohen) can tell if you have been naughty or nice by reviewing your blood tests each month. However logical reality is that most foods and supplements such-forth would fit into a sliding scale of increasing negative outcome for your weigh loss. A little extra B6 in my humble opinion wouldn't be such a big issue.

Default Multi Vitamins

G'Day

Baloo - I think you will find that 'the ones Dr C sells in his clinic here' have nothing to do with Dr Cohen.

All the clinics are independently owned and operated franchise businesses. Dr Cohen does not, to the best of my knowledge, have anything to do with the day-to-day operations of the businesses.

This is an excerpt from an email I received from Booragoon clinic after Mitcham clinic closed:

... There has been confusion about the Neways vitamin supplements being sold to clients as part of the Cohen’s program – You are not limited to these products, any multivitamin may be taken, provided they follow the guidelines in your eating plan. Blackmores Sustained Release Multivitamins and Minerals, which are readily available at your local Supermarket, Health Store or Chemist, are an option at a reasonable price...

The B6 limitation is because B6 stimulates the production of insulin, and therefore fat conversion.

As we are all about fat loss, any food or vitamin which stimulates the production of insulin must be avoided while on the program.

There is also not much point in deliberately eating / taking somthing which may stimulate hunger.

Also important is to make sure that there is sufficient chromium in the supplements. The monthly newsletters on the Cohen's official website have many interesting comments to make regarding the actual nutrition of food. There was quite a bit about chromium and magnesium about six months ago. The more we know about what is happening the better we can work with the program.

But it certainly appear that Blackmores would be the most readily available range http://www.blackmores.com.au/

Cheers

Kristine

Thanks for the info all.

I bought some USANA Essentials from the clinic. Not cheap, about AUD100 for a months supply. Some research showed that that is the going rate in Singapore. Research also showed that USANA topped many of the MultiVitimin comparison tables. I might try importing from the US where I can get them for about 60% of the price here.

Next time I'm in Aus I'll check out the blackmores.

Just to clarify I think Kristine means excessive B6.

B6 is a vital co-enzyme in our metabolism of foods, including lipids (fats), also it is very important for the production of seretonin a key factor in the Cohen diet. Low daily intake of B6 is definately not better for dieters, B6 cannot be made by our bodies and cannot be stored so we should have an reasonable amount each day.

From what I could see (internet search) there is no link between B6 and excessive insulin production. From what I got from 1st personal diet was that excessive B6 stimulates hunger in some, which may or may not be due to higher levels of insulin. The question is only what is enough B6 and what is too much B6 for a healthy person. Recommend allowances suggest 2mg/day of B6 , thus Dr Cohen recommending the consumption of multivitamin with less than 5mg is not unreasonable.

Hi Chezza,

When I started my program, my clinic recommended the Neways vitamins. I looked into this and found that they were pretty pricey. As a substitute, also recommended by the clinic is Blackmores Sustained release Multi vitamin and minerals. I also take Natures Own Calcium and Magnesium. Both of these vitamins are suitable because they dont contain gluten, yeast, sugar or lactose, etc. And they are also available from the supermarket.

I'd also be interested to know which vitamins other ppl are taking.

hi Reb,

The clinic sent us the following information. i like these vitamins.... I found my health felt better when I was taking them than the Blackmores ones. and some of the others make me feel sick, if they have gluten etc in them. But unless you are buying more than 6 times a year, or more than $170/mth, I don't think its financially worthwhile to join up as a member.

I take the Centrum multi, slow mag. for leg cramps, calcium, magnesium and zinc for bone health, and Chromium picolinate on occasion for when I get really hungry or crave something seems to help with that.

Hi Guys,

Can you pls offer any advise on what vit and minerals you are taking.
I have read a few different things:

- Skin, hair and nail by Blackmores to prevent hair loss
- Good multi vit
- Good mutli mineral

Any tips would be great - I do not want to be pill popping all day.

Many thanks
Daisy.
