Default Yoghurt

Ok, so after my disastrous last month of losses, I've been 're-evaluating'.

Among many things......yoghurt.

Until this month I've used the yoplait yoplus natural.....98% fat free.

Although it's a 2% fat, it appears all 'legal' according to the ingredients list......

Rewind to this month.....I switched over to Tamar Valley natural. It's my favourite and YUM.......however......

According to the ingredients list, it appears legal too......nothing mentioned like the sinister inulin, which I know is NOT allowed.......

When browsing down the nutritional panel, I came across an interesting discrepancy..........yoghurt has carbohydrate.....we all know that.....in the form of lactose, and most of the nutritional panels I've read have got stated carbohydrate (total) and what sugars.......so there are 2 figures......but......

In the Tamar valley, there's 3......an extra one listed as dietary fibre.....now I'm not a nutritionist or dietician, but my half a brain tells me (from that awesome book 'the sweet poison') that dietary fibre is an alternative name for inulin.........even though it is NOT mentioned in the ingredients list.

So, there is definitely something fishy going on here.......if anyone can shed some light on this, then please do, go ahead and either confirm my suspicions or reassure me........

The yoplait has only 2 figures for carbs......total and sugars, makes sense if there's nothing else added to it, however it has overall a higher carb content than does the tamar valley......

So, if anyone then also has some better ideas as to a yoghurt alternative then also jump in here. It is my brekky staple and can't live without it. I'm happy to stick to yoplait though.

Tried both the pauls and the jalna, as well as the gippsland organic. Didn't like!!!!!!

Hope to gain some much needed info and inspiration!!!!!

Hey Collie, I eat the Blackswan No Fat Greek youghurt. I have found the others too sweet for me.

Hi Collie,

I suspect that you may be right. I have done some research on the net and they say that dietry fibre in yoghurt normally comes from inulin. It does state on the container that it does not contain any added starches and surely inulin would come into the starch category???

If you have the time and the inclination you might be able to contact Tamar Valley and confirm it one way or the other.

I used Tamar Valley most of the time during my journey and I had yoghurt every day and it did not seem to slow my weightloss. Mine weight loss was pretty average (6.5kg average) but I did put it down to lack of sleep and being a vegetarian.

Personally, I think that your slow weight loss was probably not yoghurt related. But you could monitor it for a week or two and change to another brand and see if it makes a difference. I love my Tamar Valley - I never got sick of it. I cannot eat Gippsland or Jalna anymore without it making me want to gag now......just reached my limit eating it.

Take care

Interesting. From the reading I've done there is some compound or whatever you call it that they legally disguise what they call inulin as a dietary fibre and not a sugar......and it lowers the apparent sugar content of a product and make it sounds better for you than it really is........it of course is on the under handed side but hey........what else would one expect.......there's my cynical side!!!!

I'm going to make an effort to contact the manufacturers and try and get some more info.........

JC how do you go with black swan........all the black swan's I've seen in brissy have inulin, so I've steered clear......

Hi Collie,

I have Barambah Organics 99% Fat free Low Fat Natural Yoghurt. http://www.barambahorganics.com.au/o...ganic-yoghurt/

and sometimes mix in a spoonful of the natural yoghurt which has higher fat content (3.4%) but lower carbs (4.7%). Not sure how it compares overall with other yoghurts but it is organic and incredibly delicious.

You can definitely find it in QLD, as noted in the website http://www.barambahorganics.com.au/where-to-buy.aspx#

hope you like it. It has been my staple for months!

Collie, to be honest I have never looked at the packaging; I was given a list of accepted youghurts by the clinic and this one was on there. You are very right though (never doubted you for a second), inulin is listed as an ingredient - as dietary fibre. I will promptly take my head out of the sand and send a message to the clinic for clarification.

The thing is JC, I think inulin doesn't adversely affect everyone.....similar to the fenugreek thing......just enough people for it to cause a problem, so Dr Cohen decides to ban the product altogether....well that's my understanding.

I've heard about people losing quite successfully with the vaalia yoghurt too even though it's not permitted in the plan.......

You might just not be sensitive to the effects of inulin......i think I may be though.......

I think different consultants/clinics may say different things too.

When I first started I had read about the curry & inulin issues on here, asked my consultant & she said, no, any yoghurt below 2% fat, & any type of curry on the supermarket shelf is ok. Kind of made me feel like she was half-hearted.

Myself, I avoid inulin & fenugreek just in case!

Lovely, hope you found some. I quite like the taste and mixing the two types (white container and blue container makes for a lovely blend.

I also like sprinkling a bit of macona on my yoghurt

Hi Collie

I remember from my last round on the program that there was a discussion about Tamar Valley having Insulin in it as i was eating it at that time but changed afterwards because like you I did not like most of them and Tamar was the best one I found.

Yes Wendy I think I read that too, and here I thought I was being super vigilant and checking all the ingredients every time I bought the bugger. It sure is not stated in the list.......

I have sent an email to tamar valley and I'm waiting their response......

I'll update when and if I get a response!!!

Well, update on the yoghurt saga.....

I've contacted Tamar Valley via email and got a very friendly and immediate response re the inulin question. It was from the assistant Managing Director.......so that should be pretty accurate hey......

The reply read that with absolute and utter 100% certainty, there is NO inulin in ANY of their products.........whatsoever.....

So I guess that settles the debate......maybe I won't give up on it after all......
