Default Goal Weight

Hi all,

Just wondering about the goal weight range Dr C has given us and is there a reason why we should get down to it at least initally.

Is there some 'stabilising factor' with our hormones etc. that when we reach the ideal weight for our height and build that kicks in when we are able to achieve the ideal?

Those of us who feel that the goal given is maybe too low because we either can't remember having ever been that weigh before or would like to be **kg because that's what you were comfortable and happy at rather than what Dr C set. If we don't at least strive to get there initally are we not completing the program totally?

Are we sabotaging ourselves for a more than easier recurrance with insulin resistance etc. than if we reach our optimum Dr C set weight?

Why else would Dr C set a weight range for us?

Does any of this make sence?

Melissa

I chose to follow the range because it seemed to make sense. For me, the range has me in between the BMI Ideal/Overweight category so there seems to be some through (well, height, sex and foot size) built into it. I've always been a stocky build so I was releived to see Santa giving me a range that took that into account and not the medical cookie cutter "Your Height should be 72Kg" approach.

Now that I am at the range, I see that Santa was pretty good in this.

The final decision is up to you though. I know LF went 10kg below Santa's range whereas Peter feels he looks better a couple of Kg above.

Regardless of where you end up, we have the tools to reach a weight most of us have never seen in years, or ever, so why not use them to get to Santa's range and then decide. It's a more informed decision when you have reached the lowest you have ever been as opposed to deciding to stop 5Kg before hand because you've forced yourself to believe that is good enough.

Plus, there was no way I was going to go through 6 months of this programme without reaching the goal range. I wanted to prove to myself that I could and I know in a couple of years time, if I had stopped at 85, I would always have wondered "What would 80 have been like?". Now, if I decide to climb to 85, I'll know what 80 is.

That's a good way of looking at things Baloo. I have been really struggling with the decision of when to stop.

A lot has to do with all the saboteurs telling me that I have 'lost enough'. I know that there is still more to go - BUT being 15kgs off Dr Cohens goal and fitting fairly comfortably into a size 10 - my concern is where will the extra 15kgs come from and what size will that make me?

I've been thinking of stopping at 5kgs out from goal. But the range is set for what ever reason and I'm going to let my body decide when it's time. I'm just impatient to get to the end.

So near yet so far.......

Cheers

Wasn't it Asy who said she'd let her body tell her. Along the lines of "when you start getting hungry on Cohens" - or something like that. Once you've reached that point, you're likely to be "in the zone". Then, one day, she posted "I could eat a horse" - and refeed followed soon after.

You're doing great - don't let someone else make your decision for you (except maybe "Santa" :P ) Seems to me you're on top of it though (see the bolded bit of your quote)

I haven't "done" Cohens - Asy knows me from way back - she invited me to "take a look" here - I did, loved it, and stayed...
And me? I'm a tall skinny-ish bloke (BMI ~25.5) and have been this way forever, so I haven't faced (weight-wise) what you all have !!

Hi Minime
Can I ask you a question - can I ask what height and weight you are currently? The reason why I ask is that your ticker says you are 15.9kg from goal but you fit into a size 10.

I am 10kg from the upper end of my goal weight (57kg) and I still wear a 14 jeans and can't get into a 12 yet. I don't know if it's the jeans cos I haven't tried on any other clothes but I am really curious.

I think I would be happy at 60kg and that's my current goal but I'll see how I feel at that weight and work from there. I'm currently 67.7kgs as of this morning and I'm 1.6m tall.

I also have my wedding on Nov 17th so I want to finish refeed by then regardless of what weight I am - so it's a race against time. That's how I feel at the moment but I may change my mind when I get a few weeks out from the date.

Thanks
Amanda

So how do you cope with the comments that you have lost enough - don't lose any more, etc etc

That's how I got big again the last time.

Maybe it is a good thing for us girls that it takes us longer to complete the program - as my clinic explained to me - the longer you are on the program the more likely you are to succeed with mainaining your new body because you learn to develop new habits. That is why the recommend that you reach the goal set by Dr Cohen. If you are in it just for the quick weight loss then you are less likely to create the new lifestyle and just revert back to your old ways......
Thanks MiniMe,

This is something I have been going over in my head all week. Why is it some successfully lose weight on this program but then gain it all back. Has being on the program not been educational to them and the way their body reacts with food. I find that I am so full after each and every meal that I don't wish to eat another thing. Why is it that when left to ourselves we feel the need to eat so much more. AGRRRRRR..... Will this happen to me as time goes by. Please no.

Lessons in body tollerance will be noted.

Melissa

Hi Ecogirl,

I am 164cm and currently weigh 74.6kgs (as of this morning) I know I can't believe that I fit into size 10 either. It doesn't make sense to me... but I do.... My mother is concerned that I shouldn't lose any more weight because I fit the same clothes as my grandmother and she weighs about 60kgs. She didn't believe me when I told her that I weigh 15 kgs more.

This is why I'm starting to wonder where the next 15kgs are going to come from and what size I'm going to be when I get to 60kgs.

As for coping with comments of others WAmum, well fact is I just don't care what people think. How do they know that I've lost enough. Just because I maybe fit more into their ideal of how I should look? Do you want to be slim to suit somebody else or do you want to be slim and healthy for yourself? I choose me everytime!!

Although it is nice to hear that people are thinking that I am looking good it's up to me to decide when I want to finish. And what I'm going to do with my body once I've finished and am on my own. Do I want to take what I've learnt on this journey and run with it - or do I want to return to old habits and my old self.

This is such a huge journey of self discovery that the food is the easy part. Learning why I got myself to where I was has to be the most gruelling, being able to put aside other peoples ideals and stay true to yourself. Especially if you are not sure who that self is. But this is what it's all about.

If you started this cause you want to look good for a particular event or person or whatever, then I feel you are probably more likely to go back once you've reached that goal. This needs to be a life changing thing and not just something to do to get to that particular goal. I don't ever want to look/ feel like I used to and I know that if I finish this and go back to what I was doing it's just going to be a matter of time before I'm back there.

The fat stops here.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

We must all be different - Shan, I'm 169cm, my cohen's goal weight is 62-65 kgs, I'm now 69.1kgs and wondering where the extra 4kgs will come from. At 64 kgs I don't have a period. I've been 55kgs (at my very lowest 52kgs) and at 55kgs you could have mistaken me for someone who'd been in a Japanese POW camp for 4 years.

When I was trying to get pregnant my gyno told me that being 55 kgs had mucked up my fertility.

Hey WA mum, wow its weird isnt it? My gyno tells me that I am best at a lower weight as I am prone to ovarian cysts and have a perfect menstrual cycle at 55-56kg I have been lower in my early 20s and weighed in at 50kg with no problems but probably looked a bit thin.I was also a late bloomer...

Wow we have a few people from WA on this site! I am in Applecross, where abouts are you?(if you dont mind me asking!)
