paw paw question
here in Australia the products called papaw and papaya are both related and are the fruit of the same species Carica papaya, however the fruit known as papaya looks and tastes quite different to the fruit known as papaw. To make things easier for consumers the agreed understanding in the Australian industry is that the red-fleshed sweeter fruit is called red papaya, while the yellow-fleshed fruit is called yellow papaw. (quoted from http://www.horticulture.com.au/news/...ode=&newsid=34) American pawpaw (note the different spelling) on the other hand is an entirely different fruit not related to the tropical Carica papaya from which Australian red papaya and yellow papaw come. American pawpaw is also known as ‘poor man’s banana’ and is the fruit of the Asimina triloba tree. So if the things we call papaya and pawpaw are fruit of teh same tree, just one red and one white , and we can have pawpaw but not papaya, and pawpaw is actually a fruit from the Asimina triloba ....... which of these can we eat? Just curious ... trying to work out why my losses slow sometimes. Connie

Re: paw paw question
You can have the yellow papaw (although I always thought the spelling was pawpaw)...
The red fleshed Aussie PawPaw/papaya thing is not allowed. I have no idea about the american one. Sorry. asy.

Re: paw paw question
Well, my program say I can have "Papaya/Paw Paw (180g = 1 fruit)"
As our clinic is an offshoot from Aus. I also have things like 'Roo as well which we definitely don't have up here. So which is which? PawPaw Australian or PawPaw US? Until this post I didn't even know what a PawPaw was except I though it was related. Kinda like Chinese Gooseberries and Kiwifruit. Different species of the same fruit. Matter of fact, I've never seen it here in the markets either that I can remember.

Re: paw paw question
I looked on my plan since I am in the U.S. and do the internet thing. PawPaw is not on my fruit list nor is it on my hubby's.
I am guessing cause it taste's like a banana and that is too starchy or fatty or whatever it is and is not allowed. pudge |

Re: paw paw question
My understanding of Chinese gooseberries and kiwi fruit, SMS, was that they were the same thing, but the New Zealanders had renamed Chinese gooseberries for marketing purposes. I suppose they may have developed them a bit as well to produce bigger and more attractive fruit. I always call kiwi fruit Chinese gooseberries.

Re: paw paw question
Okay, a little research.
The PawPaw in the US is from a deciduous tree and is only known as a PawPaw or Papaw. http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/pawpaw.html The PawPaw in Australia is another name for the Tropical Papaya which is a herb that grows 3-4m tall or more and has a green hollow tubular trunk. This is what we also have here in Singapore. http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/papaya.html That should sort it out.

Re: paw paw question
The first time I had the fruit we know here as papaya was in Hawaii, so I'm still confused. The reddish fleshed fruit (papaya) has only been available for a few years in Australia, at least where I shop.

Re: paw paw question
The Hawaii versions are reddish-orange but they are still members of the Tropical Papaya family.
The problem is that Australians have changed the name of fruits to suit themselves. However, I don't think the Here is another link regarding same that show some of the variations as well. http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/m...apaya_ars.html Real Paw Paw, which is a native American fruit is very High in Protein hence the reason it's not allowed on our programs as a fruit allowance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pawpaw It also doesn't look like a Papaya when cut open, apparently it taste is reminiscent of papaya though but texture more like a banana.

Re: paw paw question
The American paw paw looks a lot like custard apple in that photo, apart from the shape of it.

Re: paw paw question
Interesting you would say so! It is the same family as the custard apple but is the only member of that family that isn't tropical but temperate. The same family also included sorsop as well (very popular here in Singapore).

Re: paw paw question
The paw paw is Australian and it's orange with dark seeds. The papaya is sometimes imported (but I think some grow here too). Its very dark red/orange, and has a green skin. Usually a bit smaller as Paw Paw can be quite big. I think Paw Paw are actually orange on outside too - need to check later at supermarket. Hope this helps.

Re: paw paw question
Papaya and Papaw are the same fruit in Australia, there are two different versions of the fruit but both are edible on the programme. For your further reading pleasure I give you .....
