Default yoghurt

Hi all
I have a question about yoghurt.
The plain stuff I have found has 15 g. of sugar. That said what is the difference if I find some with less than that but with fruit from my allowance. I guess I don't get the reasoning of plain that you have to add the fruit and sugar substitute to and the other that has less sugar in it to begin with.
The plain low fat or no fat I found is Dannon. Is there other yoghurt out there that I am just not finding with no sugar added.
I have to do something cause I am getting really tired of an egg everyday. It is getting to the point I would rather not eat that have an egg. I did have cottage cheese this am. But 40 grams of that ain't much and have to see how that holds me over. Guess it is mind over matter.

Hi there. So are you saying that the 6 oz. cups of Dannon fat free, plain yogurt has the 15g of sugar? That's the brand I've been using and mixing with a packet and a half of Splenda and a tsp. cinnamon. I hope I haven't been eating the wong thing

No it is the big 32 oz. container that has 15. I bought the big container thinking the hubby would eat it as well and we would just weigh our portions. Until I seen the sugar content. Plus the nasty taste of it. I had looked at the smaller ones the other day and I think they had like 9.

Hi Pudge
If sugar is in the ingredients list then it's not plain natural yoghurt. If you look on the nutritional panel sugars will be listed but that will be what is naturally occurring from the milk - I wouldn't stress about that.

In Oz I'm eating Vaalia Natural Yoghurt - it's low fat, no sugar added and the creamiest of the natural yoghurts I have tried. It's tastier than the organic and biodynamic ones I have tried and I feel fuller for longer. I was buying the 1kg tub and weighing out my food but my partner found that they make it in 175g tubs - so when I'm in a hurry for work I just grab a tub and I'm out the door.

Good luck finding one that suits.

The carb count on a yogurt container is deceptive. Studies have shown (don't have them at hand to cite) that the active cultures in truly plain yogurt (that excludes the processed and fruit preserved kinds) will eat much of the sugar in the yogurt so the actual carb count is much lower. So, as I remember it, a serving of plain yogurt with 15g carbs could actually be as low as 4g. I learned this from my low carb days. Bottomline - of course, look for the lowest carb count on yogurt but no need to be overly concerned about carb count like say bread or sweets. The added hormones and antibiotics (if I can't find organic) is much more bothersome to me. Just some food for thought.

I tryed the yoghurt I have it is the natural (it says that on the tub) I measured out my allowance added part of my peach allowance and a packet of splenda and dang it was toleralble. So it looks like I can change things up in the am now. I will be awhile before I have another egg.

My most favourite yoghurt ever (and I am not a fan) is Farmers Union Greek style natural yoghurt, with a dash of sweetener, it is so thick and creamy, low in sugar, and tastes heavenly!!!!! I actually look forward to my breaky now

Is it low fat though Swannee? I haven't found a farmers union low fat variety - i do like the farmers union brand.

I've just tried Vaalia low fat this morning for the first time. I must say that i didn't like the "runniness" of it as i'm used to very thick yogurt, but the taste was terrific.

Not a great fan of the natural yoghurt but tried one from Aldi this morning at Mum and Dad's, AC natural I think it was called. Actually quite palatable for natural yoghurt.

Hi Jo,
well bugger! bugger! I am a goose, the yoghurt was recommened by a friend (on Cohen) therefore I never checked the low fat, just assumed it was, devastatingly its not, oh no now will have to go back to the runny old vaalia brand, damn new it was to good to be true!!!!!

well, since this discussion about yoghurt, i decided to spend some time comparing the various brands...I compared the only 3 brands available in my local coles and have found the following:

They're all less than 2% fat and

Vaalia has the highest sugar content per 100g at 8.something
Jalna fat free cam in next at 6.something per 100g
and the best I've found is Attiki Skim Milk yogurt at 3.4g sugar per 100g

Now, I've tried the Jalna, and don't mind it at all when mixed with fruit...i like the thickness of it, and it reminds me of the traditional home made yoghurt my grandmother used to make.

I tried the vaalia for the first time yesterday, and whilst it tasted sweeter, i did not like the runniness of it. My opinion is that natural yoghurt (actually, any yoghurt for that matter) should be thick.

Now, i've bought a tub of the Attiki and will try that tomorrow morning and let you all know how it is.

well, i tried the Attiki this morning, and the look of it totally put me off. I was half runny and half lumpy; certainly not what I had expected.

But, it tasted quite good. Not as tart as the jalna, and not as sweet as the vaalia.

when i first started the program i tried the Dairy farmers natural low fat yogurt. It had the thickness i like but it was so tart it wasn't funny...but that could also be because i wasn't used to the taste of natural yoghurt...i might give it another try. I don't know the sugar content though...

Hey there
Well I just don't have the options here ya'll seem to have. So am stuck with Dannon Low Fat Natural. I put 1/2 of my fruit allowance and a packet of splenda. It is not as thick as I would like but I am getting used to the taste. Beats the heck out of a egg every morning.
I have just mixed up 3 mornings worth as I will be out of town till Sun. evening.
