Default Probiotics

Ok, thought I'd put it out there........

Due to my very recent courses of antibiotics, even though I'm finished, I've been left with the old antibiotic gut!!!! Not very nice.

The chemist has recommended I take probiotics for the next month, and I bought while I was taking the medication those super strong ones......Candex.

Twice the price, but also twice as strong as the regular inner health plus.

I would like to keep taking them, but this particular brand does have lactose........due to the type of probiotic yeast it contains.........Saccharomyces Cerevisiae.

I have seen that there is available a dairy free version of probiotic, in the fridge at the chemist.

Does anyone have any knowledge, advice or info about these things??? If you take them and have a brand that is OK, then I'd love to know.

Now that I'm back on the program, the last thing I want to to is have a month long deviation, even if it is for good sound medical reason......especially if there is a valid alternative.

I drink it once a week with or without any anti biotics. The dairy free one is good. I always feel good after drinking it.... It's just probiotics, so I dont see it interfering with the plan at all. If anyone says otherwise, I'd like some hard facts to back it up!

Well, got a bit of an answer about the whole probiotic thing.

Thanks MH for your input, you were right!!!

Spoke to my clinic today.........in general probiotics are NOT allowed........the yakult style drinking yoghurt.......they weren't really the ones i was talking about anyway

However, also in general, the probiotic tablets.......like inner health plus is also not allowed, all have lactose in them, so milk product stuff........

However, yes, the inner health plus (dairy free) version is perfectly ok. BUT, not the powder.....it has fructose in it......a sugar....and therefore no good, but the capsules, are fine. They have no additives at all that make them not permissible. They're free from gluten, wheat, lactose, corn, eggs, nuts and salt.

So, all in all I think I have my problem sorted....and have the blessing of my clinic too!!!!

Hi Collie, I always take the Inner Health Plus capsules (dairy free) if I have to take antibiotics and stops the chances of thrush rearing its ugly head. They're good too if you have tummy problems so hopefully they do you the world of good. Just take a little fridge back shopping with you to put them in as they always need to be refridgerated or else the culture will cease to exist making them useless.

Thanks Jewel, Gosh I hope they're ok then.

I bought them at the chemist, they put them into one of those foil bags they put fridge stuff in and then I popped into woolies and bought $300 worth of groceries. I'll die if they are no good. Fingers crossed.

I also suffer from persistent IBS.........not the constipated kind. Things go through me very easily.......Cohen's to a great extent control it....unless I eat the egg, but I avoid that like the plague because I am armed with the knowledge that eggs don't agree with me!!!!

Maybe the probiotics on a more permanent basis will go towards long term control???????

I used to take them for IBS and found sometimes it was great and sometimes it didn't seem to make a difference. I think it depends on what you're eating and how your body reacts. Taking them long term is a great idea and let's face it, you'd have to eat a tonne of yoghurt to get the same amount of acidopholous etc. It's cold weather at the moment and as long as you got them in the fridge as soon as you got home, they should be okay Collie.

If you're still taking antibiotics, you should take your Inner Health a minimum of 2 hours after or before. Guess that's to stop the antibiotics killing the probiotics.
