Fish by another name
I came home and searched the forum, and someone said that Blue Grenadier was hake, and in turn hake could also be known as Hoki. All the supermarket had fresh, other than Salmon which is not allowed, was Basa. Now I googled Basa and it turns out it is under 1% fat/100g so probably OK. So can you tell me what my allowable fish is otherwise known as locally (Melbourne). |

Hi bogie1!
I'm not sure where your local supermarket is, but from experience I cant find fish I want at Coles, but Woolworths (Safeway to you ) stocks Kailis Bros fresh fish and I have been able to obtain beautiful fresh snapper. Its a little pricey, usually around $39/kg which works out to around $5 per meal for your Cohen amounts, but I have always found the quality to be great, never watery like the 'thawed for your convenience' cr*p from the deli section and I figured a little indulgence on plan was well worth it. And still much cheaper than eating it in a restaurant! In my local store, they stock it in with the take home ready meals attached to the fresh produce area rather than in the meat section- to be honest, if I didnt know where to look for it, I would miss it altogether, so it might be worth another look or even asking in store? Kailis Bros also has a listing in Brighton so you could always give them a call to find out where stockists are near you. As an alternative, have you thought of going to a fishmonger? They would probably also be well aware of any other names the fish might be known as. I was living in Melbourne when I fist did the program, but at the time, really only ate canned tuna but I know there are plenty of fish sellers in shopping centres around, so you should be able to find one easily. If you obtained your plan in Australia, it has been adapted for an Australian consumer- I saw on another thread different names they have for fish available overseas, so the names should be relevant (I'm sure I recall seeing flake on the menu at fish and chip shops) and although your information on the fat percentage for Basa may be correct, Dr Cohen's exclusions often have more to do with the effect they have on our hormones rather than just fat percentages, so it is best to stick with the types of fish on your list. Good luck! And let me know how you go!
