Well I am a farmer and I rear veal (my husbands great grandfather actually started the veal market way back 1926)
Veal is calf meat that has only drunken milk i.e no food to chew. so the meat is pale, the meat starts to darken when you feed it grass, grain or hay. The meat is nice but tasteless compared to "a good old steak".
No it isn't tough "depend how you cook it really" (a nice juicy looking steak can be tough too lol .... actually for me, all shop brought meat is tough, but I am lucky to have home raised Po in our freezer at the moment) Rebecca

I don't eat veal "I can say I have tasted it" I was just being nosy lol

We had a English Nanny last year and he was so excited about veal for meat, I couldn't understand how he could be that excited. I do like game meat, nice wild pig or venison (or goat and rabbit) Yum yum yum (especially in a hangi lol) but I also prefer Beef, lamb domesticated pig depending how it is cooked.

I purchased some veal today... I am still scared! haha. I guess I will make a normal meal and I will also cook a back up normal steak dinner... and if I can't handle the veal I will just eat the steak dinner, minus one bite!

P.S. Thanks for the fish oil tip Nutmeg, I got some from Health2000 for $17.90.

Ha ha just loved the ref to Saffer!! Me is a proud saffer and I do agree that we LOVE our meat hence I dont think we mind cutting it up. Must say that Cohen has me more adventures with my food. Before the plan I did not eat ANY mushrooms unless it was very finely chopped and I could not see it. Now I will happily chomp down on it if its in a stir fry. Still dont have the courage to eat a full big brown mushroom with cheese and stuff for a meal so need to get there. I will also try the Enoki mushrooms as I was looking for a something to add that noodle quality. Have tried baby marrow but it doesn't have the same consistency. Like Missy I was just to scared to try the Enokis because there is no sub when you have cooked your meal. I think very well we can change the saying of "You have made your bed so sleep in it" to "You have made your meal now eat it" hehe. I am stopping at the shops after work and will def be on the look out!!

So excited! I found some enoki in a grocer today - not in my regular or a fancy grocer (small Pick n Pay for my fellow Saffers), but I couldn't believe my eyes! I usually avoid that particular store because the produce isn't as fresh or varied as my local.

Now what to do with it? Meg - your schnitzel looks divine - like Chinese Oyster Beef or something - but I'm still (again) in my chicken soup phase. Maybe proper chicken noodle soup??? Yummo - can't wait for supper!

Hi LiquidIce - I'm in the northern suburbs - Magalieskruin. My local PnP is Wonderboom Junction which is a nice, new and fresh store, but I found the Enoki's at Sinoville PnP just by chance as I never go there. The Enoki's was lovely BTW in my soup! Definitely do that again!
