Default DONATE BRAS to FIJI - Everyone Please read this thread...

The Brisbane Clinic has asked that we join them in getting behind a really great cause!

It's called UPLIFT FIJI, and it is collecting used Bras to send to indigenous women in Fiji who cannot otherwise afford a bra.

Quote:
Disadvantaged indigenous Fijians get much of their clothing from second hand Australian clothes shops. Australians don’t put bras in the charity bins, so they are rare in these shops, particularly in sizes to suit the Fijian build. A new bra costs $40, and wages range from $1.50- $4.50/hour.

With the humidity, fungal infections and abscesses occur between the breast and the chest wall. Bras will help.

Since 2005,Uplift Fiji, through Rotary International World Community Service, has sent bras through secure channels, making sure they get to the women who need them without compromising their dignity.

Keep in mind, a new bra for $40, with an average wage of $3, means a bra costs about 13.3 hours wages. So, at an equivalent cost per hour, assuming the average wage here is $30 an hour, that would make a bra cost about $400. Just imagine how difficult it would be to afford one at that rate, especially if EVERY cent of your income already goes to supporting your family. How can you use 1/3 of a week's income to buy a bra?

You can have a look at the official website HERE.

Soooooooooo... I thought we could have a FORUM BRA DRIVE!!!

I'd LOVE it if EVERYONE got involved. (guys, ask your wives for their old bras!)

Everyone please check your cupboards and see what you can send in. Remember, even worn out bras will help because they will recycle the buckles and underwires and such.

The Brisbane clinic will be happy to serve as a collection point, please post your bras EITHER to the Brisbane clinic (or drop them in if you go there): The address is: 96 Lytton Rd, East Brisbane, 4169. OR directly to the co-ordinator of the Uplift Fiji project: Liz Baker, 9 Steven St, Hurstbridge Vic. 3099 (PLEASE Mark your donation "Cohens Forum Bra Drive". as I'd like to see just how many we can amass!).

I've donated 31 bras, come on gals, see if you can beat me

Please get behind this, it's an extremely worthwhile cause, and gosh, what group would possibly have a larger number of unused large size bras!?

Please tell your friends and colleagues, see if you can get all theirs to donate as well.

Thanks everyone...

asy.

No. I can't support this initiative. Throughout history women have been convinced by evil manufacturers that bras are a necessity. The world should be braless !

Please remember guys, if you're going to mail them, send them straight to Liz Baker, if you're dropping in to Brisbane clinic that's fine.

Otherwise, if you mail them to Brisbane Clinic, they'll just have to be re-mailed to Liz.

Thanks, and don't forget to mark them "Forum Bra Challenge".

Now we just need to set up a BRAOMETER! hehe

Asy,
Is there a website with more info. I'd like to direct a few hundred female employees to it if there is, rather than send an 'informal' sort of message.
Happy to help though, esp if my DD's get back to my preferred C cup by Xmas !!

cheers,

As far as I know (from the website - www.upliftbras.org) this campaign is no longer accepting bras (except nursing bras).

I have dozens of bras I want to give to a worthy cause, so if you hear of any others, please be sure to post the details here.

When I checked today they are accepting nursing bras and bras bigger than size 18's. They ask for them to be sent to Liz Baker in Victoria. - see the website for address.
