Hi frustratedtype2

First of all congratulation to your daughter on her wonderful achievement.

To start off with I should tell you I am a Registered Nurse working in a GP clinic, just so I don't sound like I am pulling this out of where the sun don't shine. I suspect your rejection may be related to your increased risk of having an hypoglycaemic event. With the diet, your BGLs tend to be borderline low but for most people they will show no symptoms. For yourself, given your fasting glucose was around 16, your body is probably used to functioning at a higher blood glucose level, therefore if you were accepted at this point in time and started the diet, you would be forced to stop because you would probably be having frequent "hypo's" and make you unwell. Hence, at this time the diet would be more detrimental to your health than beneficial. Realistically it is better to be rejected now that to have to quit once you start.

As for the Glucose Tolerance Test, it is useful test for the diagnosis of impaired glucose tolerance which is connected with diabetes, but for someone who has type 2 diabetes you really need a HbA1C blood test to monitor your stabilisation and control (it is the most accurate blood test for diabetics to monitor and assess control of diabetes).

In addition, if you have not already done this maybe consider having a Diabetes Care Plan performed at your local GP and maybe see a diabetes educator, dietician or exercise physiologist who maybe able to provide support and assist you to better manage your diabetes and bring your glucose levels into recommended parameters. You may find you need to prescribed medication to improve your diabetes control... good news, it does not always have to be forever.

Once you get some stabilisation, do a take 2 with the Cohen's thing

I ditto everything said here. I have impaired glucose tolerance. My fasting glucose blood tests don't really tell me anything but the 2 hour one does. If you just looked at my fasting readings, I'm in perfect health (scores of 4.5 for example), but with the 2 hour test my readings are over 8.0 which isn't quite type 2 (score of 11 or higher) but isn't normal either. I know you're probably thinking "but mine's sky high with a fasting test so why bother proving I have a problem with the 2 hour one' but the 2 hour one shows how your body responds to an influx of glucose in the bloodstream and how well it breaks down this sugar over 1 hour and then 2 hours.
It really is a useful test - although I appreciate they are bloody awful! I've had many now....

Good luck and if it helps, when I had gestational diabetes I followed a low GI diet plan and I actually lost weight whilst pregnant and felt wonderful and maintained steady and low blood glucose levels.
