travelling mum is hitting the road
I am married with 3 kids, 6 1/2, 5 and 1 1/2 and are currently home schooling the 2 oldest through SIDE as we are leaving to start our travels around oz in about 4 weeks. I'm hoping the travelling won't affect my mealtimes, but I'll be doing my best as I really want this too work. I know I don't have as much to lose as alot of people, ( only 10kg) but I don't think the challenge will be any less. Specially the not drinking alcohol! I am fairly short so 10kg makes a big difference. I can't wait to start both the cohens and my travels, and look forward to getting and giving some support on this forum. I've been reading around here for about a week, and the support and morale is fantastic! Well, it's time for me to get to work and then start school for the day. I'm EXCITED!!! |

Re: travelling mum is hitting the road
Good luck TM,
And the key to sticking with your diet is PLANNING and PREPARATION. Don't let yourself get caught short - which could then lead to eating stuff you are not supposed to eat :-p. Personally I have found when travelling, as long as I do NOT eat carbs and sweets, I am still doing OK... just stick to allowed proteins, allowed veg, allowed fruit, and carry your crackers with you! All the best, I am sure you will do well.

Re: travelling mum is hitting the road
HI Travelling mum,
Welcome to the forum. Your plans sounds wonderful. I am in process for a similar journey and had hoped to be on the raod already - just ironing out some last minute hitches so will do a couple of "shakedown" trips in the next few weeks and hopefully be on the road by end of the month. I have found travelling and Cohens very compatable. If I knew i had a day of travelling on road would pack lunch at breakfast time or even the night before. I have a little one burner with gas and my small scanpan which go with me - burner was the best $20 I ever spent. you know the ones with the little gas bottle - could cook anywhere. Weigh your protein out and even use a vac sealer - we are taking on of those on the road as the isolated places it is harder to store meat. Enjoy the road, Shanara

Re: travelling mum is hitting the road
thanks shanara and foggyduo. I have a good set of digital kitchen scales which by the sounds of it will become my new best friend! The only thing I can see being a problem at this stage is maybe not having access to fresh fruit and vegies if we are out bush for weeks at a time. How does dried and canned work as a comparasin? Are they allowed? I'll also have to work out how much refridgeration we are going to allow. We won't be camping in facilities at all if we can help it, we are much happier to be on our own, but once I get the plan I will be able to think it out a bit more. Preparation will be the key.

Re: travelling mum is hitting the road
Hi TM,
Yes, organisation is the key. Previously, on Cohens when travelling I was reasonably close to civilization so could stock up every few days. I did once live on canned tuna for about a week with egg for breakfast. Swore I would never eat canned tuna again. I have just brought a vacuum sealer as meat will last up to 6 weeks in that provided refrigeration is constant. Veges have to be blanched but have similar life span. Have also now got dual batteries and a solar charger. Have to be careful with cans as they often contain sugar and other nasties but I am taking a supply of asparagus and mushrooms in cans for emergencies. Of course the ubiquitous canned tuna will be coming with us as well. Have an inverter for Vacuum sealer and the vacuum sealer guy will post free of charge all over Australia. Feeling confident this will work. Should also make cooking easier as everything will be packed up when we stock up in towns - probably have a day vaccum sealing then off we go. Might run into you on the road ...... lol Shanara

Re: travelling mum is hitting the road
May see you about Shanara!! Where are you travelling?
I guess when I get the program I will know more about what I can and can't have. It sounds like you have to read all the ingredients and additives on the packaging of food, is this right? I should get the info pack today anyway. I will be able to take as much tinned food as I like though, but I guess you get tired of eating the same food after a while. Safe though. I can't wait to start! The only thing that would stop it now is if I get pregnant. For a change I hope that doesn't happen for another few months at least. |
