Garlic - Yay or Nay??
Im a bit confused as to whether we are allowed to have fresh garlic or not. My Cohens book says garlic powder in minimal amounts is ok but doesnt say anything about fresh garlic. I know we cant have bottled garlic (or ginger) and I understand that due to the preservatives and other ingredients etc. But when you look in the book, in the recipes section, they have recipes that have garlic in the ingredients. For example, theres a recipe for stuffed mushrooms which calls for "2 x Tablespoons crushed garlic". and you actually put the garlic in the dish - not just put it in for flavour and pull it out later. Other dishes also call for garlic but only one dish actually specifies "garlic seasoning". Also, I subscribe to the Cohens newsletter that you can get from the Cohens website. In the May 2007 issue, they have a recipe for Garlic King Prawns. It states in the ingredients "Garlic (included in veg allowance) and when you go on to read the method its says "crush a couple of garlic cloves and add to prawns". And other issues also mention garlic in their recipes. Can you see why Im confused? Anyone have any ideas? Nat |

Re: Garlic - Yay or Nay??
We can have fresh garlic, it just has to be weighed in with our vege allowance. We cant have it minced out of the jar.... hope that makes sense!

Re: Garlic - Yay or Nay??
I have also read recipes where sliced garlic is put in for flavouring and then removed before eating. I do this with chillies. As I grow them, I add them for the flavour and then remove before eating. I personally do not like the taste of the chilli skin, but love the heat and flavour they give off. I then don't count this as my teaspoon of herbs. I have not contacted my consultant about this, but have been doing it throughout the whole program.

Re: Garlic - Yay or Nay??
I spoke to my consultant about the garlic and she said that it was ok to use as a flavouring as long as i removed it before eating....
If it's used that way, then the advice given to me was that I don't need to weigh it or count it.... |

Re: Garlic - Yay or Nay??
My consulatant has said fresh garlic can be used (also frsh ginger) as long as
it is counted as part of your veg allowance. You are not able to used pre-minced stuff out of a tube or a jar however. Cheers Daisy.

Re: Garlic - Yay or Nay??
Powdered garlic is OK so long as it's measured in your teaspoon per day of dried herbs.. fresh garlic is OK so long as it's weighed in your vegie allowance.. or as the others have said you take it out before eating.
Another way to get the flavour but not actually ingest it is to rub the garlic clove over the frying pain before cooking. |
